    Some questions on mixing drums

As far as I know, to side chain a tone you just need a track with the 60Hz tone recorded on it. Then gate that track and trigger the gate with the kick track. If I was doing it, I would record the tone through the whole song, put a gate in the insert of that channel then run a direct out from...

    Final mixdown questions

It's a standalone CD recorder, it just operates like a cassette deck. I know what you mean about keeping it all analogue for the vinyl release but you may have a problem finding a pressing plant that accepts 1/4" tape. Then there's the issue of your machine and theirs being in calibration. I...

    Final mixdown questions

What recorders are you using? Fostex R8s? I assume you're going to want your recordings on a digital format in order to distribute them in which case at some point you'll have to mix/ transfer to a digital recorder. If you get a 1/4" deck to mix to, will you then transfer that to the computer...

Mic'ing drums in the same room.

Yeah, I meant when working with another drummer. If it was only me there, it wouldn't make a difference

Mic'ing drums in the same room.

Hi, like probably most of the people here, I don't have a separate control room. This makes changing mic positions rather difficult. When I'm trying to get a good drum sound, I position the mic, record about half a minute, play back then try and reposition if the sound isn't right. I have to go...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

Yeah, it was really great being able to get them in. Our drummer is playing the trumpet solo, again drenched in reverb. The tracks were: 1. 2. 3. Kick (AKG D112) 4. Snare (SM57) 5. Overhead (Oktava MK-219) 6. 7. 8. The drums were then bounced to one track: 1. Trumpet Solo (MK-219) 2. Drums 3...

.they're friends of our drummer. He scored the strings and they came down from London for the day to record them. They were very professional, they hadn't seen the piece before and they mastered it very quickly.

Hi, all of those tracks were recorded using a Fostex R8 and Fostex 812 mixer. They were mixed to a Sony CD recorder. The string quartet was recorded live with a single microphone (Oktava MK219) in my music room (carpeted and quite low ceiling) and a lot of reverb added. The first violin and the...

    Re-Amping bass drum

Hi, has anyone ever tried re-amping bass drum? I've got a drum sound I'm quite pleased with but the kick is lacking in punch. I was wondering if this was a possibility for making it sound better. If so, how would you go about it? I have an Ampeg BA115, Fender Blues Deluxe and a Sessionette 75...

    Help. Tascam MS16 speed problem.

I always clean it before I use it. It was just because I only ran it through for a few seconds then took it off, I didn't count that as having used it. Pretty stupid of me really. I should start cleaning it after use too. Am I right in thinking that if I don't, the gunk will get harder to remove?

    Help. Tascam MS16 speed problem.

It's playback speed. The pinch roller and capstan seem to be running fine and not slipping at all. Anyway, I seem to have sorted it now. It really seemed like sticky tape, it was slugging along and squealing but I was pretty sure the tape wasn't sticky. I had a look and saw that it was...

    Help. Tascam MS16 speed problem.

Hi, I've got a big problem with my Tascam MS16. I've just run a reel of tape through it and the speed is fluctuating massively, like it's got sticky shed. I've tried it with both some new Quantegy I've got and a reel with existing recordings on (that I only used last week). It's suddenly doing...

    Mixer suggestions

I would go for a Fostex 812. I used one with my R8 before I upgraded to a tascam MS-16 and studiomaster. The fostex is a really good desk. Reliable, good EQ, buss metering and great sounding. I thoroughly recommend it.
