As far as I know, the early Beatles drums were recorded with three mics. A Coles 4038 overhead, an AKG D20 in front of the kick and an AKG D19 on the snare.
Why is it that you want a DAT deck? It's a pretty dead format and as far as I know, doesn't offer any sonic improvements over hard disc.
Since you're after one though, it seems that they don't go for very much second hand so I'd just try and get Tascam's best model. The DA40 looks good.
Here's my soundcloud account: soundcloud.com/jrkimber
I've produced all the tracks on there. These ones are the ones I've put the most time and effort into: soundcloud.com/jrkimber/sets.
Maybe it'll be apparent what the shortfalls are when hearing the tracks.
Thanks for the replies.
Hi,
I'm not quite sure if this is in the right category so moderators feel free to move it.
Basically, I've got a studio set-up that I'm fairly happy with but I know that the sound could be better. So here's the question: what should be my next upgrade/purchase? My studio currently consists of...
New track here by my side project Ziggy Zigford and the Zigsters. It's me playing all the instruments. Enjoy :) Ziggy Zigford and The Zigsters - Come On And Zig With Me by jrkimber on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free
My studiomaster desk has backwards labelled channels like that. I think it's so that channel side-cars can be added (mine has an additional 4 channels)
I had a Fostex 812 and it was brilliant. I had to get rid of it when I upgraded to 16 tracks. i replaced it with a studiomaster 20/16/2 desk but in many ways I prefer the Fostex. It's very low noise, the EQ is great, it's got a good monitor section, nice chunky faders with no routing buttons in...
Here's a new track from my side project Ziggy Zigford and the Zigsters. It's me on all the instruments and backing vocals. Enjoy :D

Hi,
Like probably most people here, I have my recorder in the same room as the instruments. My Tascam MS16 has a very loud fan in it and it's getting onto some of my recordings. I can't move the recorder out of the room so I was wondering if I could swap the fan for a newer, quieter one. I...
Hi,
I currently only have one Effects unit in my studio, an Alesis Wedge. I've been satisfied with it so far but I'm now thinking of upgrading. For a start, I need more than one effects unit as I quite often want to use multiple effects at once. I only have two post fade AUX sends on my desk...
I think I can claim to be all analogue. I record to a Tascam MS16 and mix through a Studiomaster 20/16/2 desk. I mix down straight to CD and have a digital reverb though so I suppose I can't claim to be 100% analogue. I don't do any of that track to tape, transfer to DAW stuff though so I think...
