    Tascam MS16 Servicing

I would set it up myself but I don't have the equipment to do so (tentelometer, spring gauges, MRL tape etc.) and it would cost a lot to buy it all. I'm probably just going to have to bite the bullet and pay to have it serviced. Expensive but probably worth it.

    Tascam MS16 Servicing

I've just spoken to Tascam on the phone and they've said that it will be about 300 or 400 pounds to service the machine. Does that sound reasonable?

    Record on *ancient* medium?

RMGI make tape and there's also Zonal if you want 1/4" on 7" spools. I keep hearing that Quantegy are coming back and they keep saying so on their Twitter but I doubt it's true.

    Tascam MS16 Servicing

I've contacted HHB and it seems that they can service it. I'm waiting for them to get back to me about the price though. It's going to be a pain to drive it up to London (obviously posting it is out of the question) but I'm sure it's worth it. I really want it to be set up and running properly...

    Tascam MS16 Servicing

Hi, I'd like to get my Tascam MS16 recorder serviced and calibrated properly. Does anyone know where I could get this done? I love in South-East England. I was told by someone that HHB service Tascam machines. I can't get through to them so I don't know if this is correct or not. Thanks James

    Tascam MS16 dodgy tape lifters

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the problem with them acting like they did in the first video was because of that. My local tech guy (who is known by everyone in the South-East as the god of gear repair) told me that Hammond oil is basically identical to normal 3 in 1. I use that on my Hammond and it...

    Tascam MS16 dodgy tape lifters

Right, I haven't been able to get hold of my tech guy yet (hopefully next week) but I've cleaned up what I could in the tape lifter assembly and greased it slightly. The tape lifters are now nice and snappy when they operate on their own. They're no longer acting like they did in the last video...

It's my dad who did the intro. I'm not sure either, I seem to remember it being called the snake dance but I'm not sure of its real origins.

Okay, I'm going to get my local tech guy to have a look at it. I'll ask him to clean it all up. Thanks James

    Tascam MS16 dodgy tape lifters

Okay, I took the dress plate off but I couldn't really access the mechanism. I made this video to show what it's doing though. In the video they spring out at the start but when there's tape in the machine it does something similar to what they do on the way back in on the video. Thanks James

Thanks! Is it easy and fairly risk free to remove the dress plate? Also, if it is the rubber causing the problem, is it easy to get hold of a replacement? Thanks again, James

    Tascam MS16 dodgy tape lifters

Hi, my Tascam MS16 has a problem with its tape lifters. They seem to be sluggish in responding and don't lift the tape fully a lot of the time. On my old R8 they used to shoot out and back in again but on this machine they move slowly outwards and sometimes don't manage to lift the tape away...

Can Tape REALLY be this Sticky?

As far as I know, sticky tape is sticky from the start. Any reels of sticky tape I've had have just refused to move as soon as I've loaded them. I suppose those were particularly sticky. In fact, the machine needed a thorough clean before it would play anything else (non-sticky tape). That stuff...

    Can Mixing boards be combined?

I thought about doing this with my old Fostex 812. It's one of the few boards that has all the connections to chain the desks together (busses in and out etc.) I didn't do it though as I realised it would be inconvenient to have two desks together. And it would look silly I thought. However...

I was thinking about getting an 8 track reel-to-reel

Have a look at the Fostex R8 and the Tascam TSR-8. Those are both good 8 track decks.

What your pride and joy piece of equipment??

    Probably my Tascam MS16 recorder.

Just a heads up to anyone who is looking into the UAD stuff...

I don't know why you assume that. Clearly you would rather do that but that doesn't mean that everyone else would. I would much much rather work with tape recorders and other analogue equipment than just 'press a button'. I'm not lying or being a luddite, I genuinely prefer working in this way...
