    Virtual guitar amps/analog guitar amps

I often wonder why some people want DSP things to sound better so badly. The same goes for a lot of things in audio. Some people just seem to feel that they HAVE to use a computer to do something, even if they're not quite sure why they need to. What's the problem with real amps sounding better...

    Parametric EQ build

Also, given that I'm using a dual rail supply, could I eliminate that 100K resistor before the first op-amp? And what difference would that make?

    Parametric EQ build

Thanks for the reply, I'm using single op-amps (one per chip). I've soldered ceramic caps across all the supply pins on the op amps and I'm using a +-15 power supply. I haven't twisted the wires to the pots together. Could this alone be causing the crosstalk?

COMPRESSOR advice: 2-Channel STEREO or MONO?

I would say that a compressor is an essential item. It basically serves to even out the volumes of the individual tracks and make the song sound a lot more 'together' and 'solid'. They're not hard to get used to using although they can be a bit confusing at first. Unless you want to spend mega...

Any MS-16 owners in the UK?

Cheers! Yeah, quite a few people have said that. Frequently Elvis Costello too. Glad you like the outro to the EP. It was originally meant to fade with the reverb but after listening to it without the fade and with the big fill at the end left in (which was just the drummer messing around...

    Proper spring reverb

There's the Danelectro spring king but that's more of a guitar effect than a studio unit. There's also the Vermona retroverb but that's pretty expensive. If you can build electronic stuff, you could get this kit PAiA - 6740K Hot Springs Reverb Kit, Studio Series, 6740K.

Any MS-16 owners in the UK?

Same here. I wouldn't really mind paying that for an alignment tape if that was all I needed. To set up the machine though you'll need an oscilloscope, function generator, audio meter, THD meter, Tentelometer, spring gauges and probably more stuff I can't remember. All that stuff adds up to a...

Any MS-16 owners in the UK?

I do have an MS-16 but unfortunately no MRL tape. plus I'm in Hastings. I get Clive Kavan to calibrate my machine but he charges for travel so it might cost quite a lot to get him to come.

    Recording in a cold room

Thanks, I've switched everything on to warm up. It's a pretty big room so I'll probably still be cold though.

    Recording in a cold room

Hi, I'm doing some recording today and my studio is freezing cold (and I can't really afford to put the heating on). Is this going to be a problem and is there anything I should do about it? I don't want to risk damaging my machine. Thanks James

Why do people flip their condenser mic upside down?

Why do people flip their condenser mic upside down?

I think one of the reasons is that you can hold the words under it without hitting the stand.

Standard Old Timey Cassette Recorders - What would you recommend?

When I was a kid I used to mess around with those things all the time and they always sounded terrible to me. Ridiculous motor noise, loads of wow and flutter, just generally bad quality. The first good recorder I got as a Sony Walkman pro WM-D6. That had a brilliant sound. I also remember the...

    Industry standard/ workhorse gear

I think that it would be very hard to recommend a microphone due to its popularity beyond perhaps the SM57. If you were spending a lot then it would be easy to say "go to a pro recording session and the chances are that you'll see a U87 or C414 in use" but at this home recording level there are...

    Microkorg Bass Sound

Hi, I've been trying to get a good solid bass synth sound from my MicroKorg. However, all the sounds that I get are solid at first but then just fizzle out to be really weak. How can I stop this so that the sound just stays solid? Thanks James

I mix straight from my tape machine to a CD recorder.

There's no transformer hum that I can detect, the whole thing is really quiet. The only problem is the crosstalk :/

    Parametric EQ build

Okay, I've finished building it now. I tried the unit without the big capacitors on the outputs of the voltage regulators and there was no noise so I left them out. I didn't want to risk messing up the board. Yep, I've got ceramic decoupling caps on all the op amps. The unit works almost...
