    A pair of MSH-1's or MSH-2's?

I don't think the MSH-1k would make a very good overhead mic. Despite the cardioid pattern, the frequency response is not very tailored to overheads. I think it sounds like a condenser version of an SM57, or thereabouts. Might work for some songs, but I would say the MSH-1 omni would be a better...

Mic for vocals AND acoustic guitar in a noisy bedroom environment

The e835 will have a little better high frequency response than the 57. The 57 is a little more upper-midrange intensive. Either one will work. I happen to prefer the 57 for most things, but that's just me.

Van Halen "I'll wait" drum toms

What be Roto Toms? How to get sound of Roto Toms? I am wanting sound of "I'll wait" without Roto Tom? Why you mean Extra Companding? Plugins? Are Roto Toms creamy-crunchy-peanut-buttery?

    Darker toned mic $200?

I would definitely consider a ribbon. The Nady/Apex/Cascade/TBone/etc. are in your pricerange. I like the Nady RSM-2 for vocal work. Not an LDC, but the Kel HM-1 is darker than your average condenser.

    trombone recording... pop filter?

Unless you're miking really close, the amount of air coming out the bell of a trombone should not cause any problems for the mic. Try backing up a few feet to capture more of the ambience of the horn, though, and not just the up-close sound, which will naturally include some strange noises from...

    Specific Isolation Headphone Advice.. pls.

Get in-ears, such as the Etymotic Research ER-4p (41dB of isolation with the foam ear pieces). If that's not enough, cover them with shooting earmuffs for extra isolation.

    Distortion VST for Vocals?

    Distortion VST for Vocals?

Cubase's "Da Tube" can add a touch of grit, but I think it only comes with Cubase. Camel Crusher is cool for something a little less subtle. Some of the Digital Fishphones plugs (Blockfish, Dominion) have adjustable saturation in addition to the compression.
