    Tascam M520 Story...

Nice! ? I probably won’t go that far yet, but it sure would have been nice if they had done this already… but then, for all the M-520 CAN do for such a low price… I hate to complain.

You are correct, not enough time working with it and my sessions are small, just me, occasionally one other person, not like back when i worked in the studio and we did full bands. Thanks

I may just do that on Channels 3 & 4 since I’ll never be using the Phono function and they stay on MIC setting. I won’t be mic‘ing drums, so no need for a ton of phantom. Good solution, I feel stupid that I just didn’t decide to do this and dedicate some to always on. Thanks!

    Tascam M520 Story...

That’s what I do, I bypass the built-in mic preamps when using my outboard preamps with or without phantom power BUT the M-520 actually has some pretty great sounding mic preamps and I love using them with dynamic mics for sure, but even with condenser mics… but that brings me back to what I...

    Tascam M520 Story...

My only complaint in using my M-520 recording with condenser mics that I don’t want to run through outboard preamps for phantom is that they put the damn 48V phantom switch on the back of the unit!! would have been so convenient to have a switch on the channel strip!! WHY? ugh. Other than that...

    My studio build

Yup, sorry guys, way too OCD to have that out in the open! Now, behind all that equipment, inside my console desk, accessed from under and behind, there is a mess of coiled and labeled cables that looks like a rats nest by the time I got everything installed. I velcro tie groups together and I...

    My studio build

It's actually been in here the whole time but i had to have it crammed into the corner and unusable! It's a K100 and sounds great. I re-capped it when i got it, no noise at all. I use it mainly as a bass amp. I really love it!

Latest iteration, some moves have made more room for synths!

    My studio build

Yes, I'm very OCD and Virgo with my clean and organized approach BUT I was also trained at the studio I worked at in the early 90s as a junior engineer to keep it organized and put it away every time, same spot. "there's a place for everything and everything in it's place" as the boss always...

    My studio build

I love that little thing! After years of playing super loud AC15 and other tube amps, I got that for xmas from my lovely wife and got the message (ha ha). I was super suprised at how good it sounded at low volumes.

Latest studio photos... I continue to refine and loving recording to both 16 track 1" and 2 track 1/4" tape so very easily with this system.

    Room Treatment and Monitor Choice

Thanks @ecc83 for the correction, I kinda meant set away from the wall, and should have said on a 1/3 - 2/3 basis depending on the room size/shape. The studio I worked at in 1993, which was built in 1976, all analog, we had huge bank of speakers in the upper portion, on an angle, on the wall...

    Room Treatment and Monitor Choice

btw, I deal with the rear ported design by having my monitors about 12” from the wall and using the built in electronics to modify them to better suit my space (i.e. bass response and high filter), that and having the bass trap behind them about 2” off the wall seems to help as well. As Pinky...

    Room Treatment and Monitor Choice

When I built my studio last year, and showed pics here of it empty with shiplap plank walls, everyone warned I was going to have massive reflection issues. By the time I filled up the 10 x 12 space with console desk, recorders, shelves of books and storage, keyboards and guitars on the walls… I...

@maurice.marion That’s great! Yes, we have quite the wonderful community here. I have learned so much from this thread and from @sweetbeats, we are lucky to have him and so many others here willing to help! I look forward to helping and conversing with another M-520 user!

BTW, I took this cool photo of my M-520 to use as my iMac background screen. If anyone wants it, this is the full res version.

Keyboard & Mouse shelf for my Console

I thought I'd share minor project but one very needed. I'm glad I completed it today. In a small studio, space is everything and being able to push my chair under the console saves a lot of room. I originally had a sliding keyboard shelf but the ergonomics were all wrong typing and mousing so...

Hey, great tune and the flange sound would be cool but I'd hate it if it was always on. Maybe Sweetbeats suggestion about not being identical tracks... worth experimenting. I, too, love my M-520 so much that when I saw one come up on FB Marketplace for free, I jumped on it. Turns out it was...

@maurice.marion That's great news!! Congratulations! On the buzzing, I concur with Sweetbeats, sounds like digital noise. Lots of variables but when I connected my keyboard (I have vintage synths) mixers from the other side of the room to my console, I had that kind or buzz and used a Hum...
