    Tascam M520 Story...

Next question: At Tape Camp at the Welcome to 1979 studio in Nashville, the owner there, Chris, said that they never turn off any equipment in the studio. That the compressors, preamps, console, tape machine, etc. all stay on 24/7 365… Claimed that it did more damage turning them off and on...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Yes, just two inputs and outputs on the FX. Good info all around. I love how flexible this CAN be but simple is best! I’m going to play around with these methods to see what works best For me. The awesome bit about using the Tascam PB-32P patch bays on D OUT & TAPE IN for the MS-16 is: 1. They...

I have already connected my D OUT & TAPE IN to two patch bays and it’s working great!! But I get what you are saying.

    Tascam M520 Story...

Yes, I was just reading that a few minutes ago and I think it managed to mess up my brain a little more! :) I’ll go out to the studio in a bit when our guests finally check-in and I can close the front office to test out a scenario

    Tascam M520 Story...

Thanks both of you, for some reason this is hitting my brain like an algebraic equation… aye yi yi! So, wired as follows: AUX SND 1 —> M-One Ch. 1 (reverb) IN —> M-One Ch. 1 OUT —> ?? Ch. 17 on M-520? Should I do this with a patch bay since LINE IN Ch. 17 is already connected to my patch bay?

    Tascam M520 Story...

What is the point of putting the effect on channels 17-20? As opposed to just using the AUX controls on each channel? Is there a reason for one way or the other?

    Tascam M520 Story...

I kinda remember doing that when working at the studio but I never had to set it up. So, if I have, say, that guitar example scenario above, would I record the original guitar channel to a track AND the reverb (ch17) to another track and then mix them down after? What if I just want the dry...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Ok, here goes, @RFR & @sweetbeats, and anyone else in the know: Next up in wiring my studio, I want to connect my effects unit, a TC Electronic M-One XL. It’s two channels and I have it running parallel or each channel separate, with reverb on one and delay on the other. I want to connect this...

    Tascam M520 Story...

I might need to bend your brain on a few questions I have about best usage on this thing seeing how after 30 years, you’ve likely seen every scenario. Mind if I PM you or would it better to start a new thread OR would it benefit others to see the questions and get answers? Just don’t want to...

    Tascam M520 Story...

YES! Always walk through the basics first. I’ve already seen this using the non-soldered patch bays I have, couldn’t get channel 7 to work, was about to start spraying deoxit and exercising the knobs, switches, sliders, etc. then assume it was the board failing… glad I went over to check that...

    Tascam M520 Story...

GOOD NEWS!! Stereo Master A now works! I started with tilting the meter bridge back, as you stated, checked the connections and continuity there. All good. Realized that from that PCB the wires came off it and fed into the hole into the master section. On a lark, I thought instead of removing...

    New-to-me gear: Tascam MS-16 1” 16 channel recorder

Right here on homerecording forum. @wkrbee had listed that he was clearing out a bunch of MS-16, 388 and more machine parts. I got a set of VUs for my 388 and the new head block for the MS-16. The head block is mint for sure. He’s a good guy!

    Tascam M520 Story...

Tested meter bridge again today, connected plug from 7/8 meters to 9/10 meters. Ran music through 7/8 and 9/10 responded perfectly. So good news that the meters themselves work... Bad news is that it's in the inside of the mixer master section that I'll have to delve to find the problem...

    New-to-me gear: Tascam MS-16 1” 16 channel recorder

I was just looking at the guides while taking that last pic just now, I think there is minimal wear but it would be a good idea to rotate them anyway, why not, right? I'll check curling next chance I get. The other thought is, when I'm ready to do the calibrating/alignment, it might simply need...

    New-to-me gear: Tascam MS-16 1” 16 channel recorder

Using RTM SM911. I’ve cleaned up the rollers, guides and heads since this photo was taken. I can go take a new one if needed. All the gunk came off. I also replaced the capstan pinch roller wheel.

    New-to-me gear: Tascam MS-16 1” 16 channel recorder

So far in testing this unit finally, I have found great levels on all channels except 1 & 16. I suspect this is common for a machine this old that has some tape wear on the heads (about 50% I think). I just bought a NOS head block with all three heads for more than I paid for the machine, but I...

What Is It That Compells Me…

LOL. When I wrote that, I was talking about myself being a Virgo and ”particular” about things that way. Not guessing at your sign, I promise! :) Yah, my 244 cosmetically will never be worth a whole lot, it looks like someone left a rubber instrument cable on top of it and it got heated up in an...

    Tascam User Guide Magazines

Oh, how I would have loved to see one of the 520s minty fresh and new! The music store I worked at in 1987-88 was a Yamaha dealer for keyboards, Jackson guitars, Zildjan cymbals and Tama drums. I was a Roland and Fender guy, so I didn’t really drool over the gear too much, but it was fun to be...
