    Mxl 2006

If I’m not mistaken, someone at MXL once told me that the 2006 used the same Schoeps type circuit (a.k.a. the “Dorsey mod, etc.) as the 1006, but utilized better capacitors. I guess they got wind of everyone modifying their V63s, V57s, and 1006s, and thought they’d try it themselves. I know some...

    old school ribbon mics

I've heard several folks say that the new Nady (now around $200 street, less on eBay) has that sound, but just not quite as good as the RCA copies.

Marshall revives the V77s Tube Mic in a newly designed body...

Hmmmm didn't realize the V93 was painted... - I'll have to get a closer look.

    help me f-up(mod) this mic

I don't know with out looking at it. Marik might be able to tell you, but he's pretty busy right now. Maybe if he sees this thread he'll pipe in. Or, you could just pm him.

    help me f-up(mod) this mic

LOL! Of course, I wasn’t insinuating that you do that – just pointing out that it was more than a simple mod.

Marshall revives the V77s Tube Mic in a newly designed body...

Interesting. So that would mean the older Mars V93's versions are better than the 2003 versions because of this. Did you ask him if the 2003 still used a 797 capsule?

    help me f-up(mod) this mic

Last time I heard from Scott (3 months ago) he had a few boards left and they were going for $20ea. A FET from him is $5 and the resistors, caps, and other parts from Digikey will be close to $15 + the $5 surcharge for less than minimum orders, which brings it to $20 + shipping, so you are...

    help me f-up(mod) this mic

Technically, referring to Dorsey and Royer versions as "mods" is a little misleading - they are actually complete electronic re-builds.

    AT 4047 for vocals?

The 4047 is a great sounding vocal mic. The 4060 is better (I'd put it up there with some of the "world class" mics), but if you can't afford one (used for ~$650 on up), get the 4047.

Moving up from C1 and Rode NT-1

Chess nails it - I've owned/used all three and the 319 is very complementary to the NT-1 and C1. FWIW, my NT-1 and C1 sounded very similar, with the C1 being a little clearer and having slightly more headroom (I'm guessing because of a higher capsule voltage). I ended up keeping the C1 and...

Hehe, yeah that one was for you. :D

Moving up from C1 and Rode NT-1

I'm not crazy about the blue baby, but other than that, it's a good list, I'll add an AT4047 (I luv mine!), AT4060, and an egg beater. If you like warm and bright - AT4050

Tube Mic on the Cheap - MXL V69

According to the review here it sounds mostly identical to V69, but by the time you buy a shock mount (included with the V69 - not with the V6) the price is exactly the same. So, the only good I see is that you get the "sound" without having to deal with the tube supply.

    E-MU 1820M Mic Pres / TFPro

Yes, I was thinking list price, so these would be in my $600-$1000 range, and also the ones Oz mentions.

    SP B1 again.

Thanks for the info and the link. A month or so back I tried buying an AT mic from a couple vendors that was going for $30 less on eBay and they wouldn't budge a cent. This and similar experiences is more or less what I was basing my point of view on. Guess it depends on the dealer and the product.

    SP B1 again.

Well, according to evilbay, I stand corrected. The last "new" one on there went for $235 with free shipping while the "new" C1s are all $199. So if you want to wait for one to show up on the 'bay, (and I would) Dan's correct. However, I can't say that I agree that they can be negotiated from...
