    New MXL Mic

Same here. :) Did you use a 1000uF polystyrene between the capsule and the FET? You have to get them at Mouser. This makes the most difference. I'll be modifing one for a friend in the next 2 or 3 weeks. I'll post "before" and "after" mp3s.

    New MXL Mic

Yes, they do use the Schoeps circuit and yes they are good capsules. It's just that they use those nasty sounding ceramic capactiors instead of polystyrene (1000pf) and metal films (.22uf). I here a pretty significant difference when switching out the 1000pf ceramic with a polystyrene. (Probably...

    New MXL Mic

Yep. And if they'd put decent capacitors and other components in them, you could use them for something besides a paperweight. No, not better. IMHO it's just a way for MXL to make some bucks selling the same old re-packaged thing. The average musician-joe goes to GC, sees a 990 for...

    New MXL Mic

The 1006 circuit is similar to the “Dorsey” circuit, which is actually variation of a Schoeps design where bipolar transistors are used instead of a conventional transformer for matching the microphone’s output impedance to the preamp’s input impedance. In this type of circuit, the quality of...

    wow - mxl v69

YES! Not a bad idea for any condenser, but an absolute necessity for tube mics.

Lee, What mic preamps are you using?

    Adk Tt-ce

I tried one at the NAMM show and loved it. NAMM is a noisy place, but from what I could tell, it was far and away the best mic for my voice, IMHO. $950 is the wholesale cost of a new one - it's worth it, but ALWAYS make lower CASH offers. Start around $650 - $700.

    New MXL Mic

Yeah, I noticed that. I’m pretty surprised by it too, because the MXL rep I spoke with insinuated that it would be a little darker on top and more open sounding. It is basically an upgraded 1006 – same housing, circuit, and capsule, but better components.

if the MXL2001 is such a crappy mic,

Innovation is correct - They aren't that crappy, at least the one I had wasn't. I would have keep it, but I needed some money, so I sold it. I might get another one sometime. I was really surprised - not bad at all.

New PA system in church...Help me spend $10,000

If you just went by how many people are usually at a service, you'd come up short on Christmas and Easter. ;)

New PA system in church...Help me spend $10,000

Yep. Believe it or not, sound system installers down here in the south tend to think of church size in terms of members as much or more than the actual dimensions of the building. He needs to know how big the choir is too. All legitimate questions. You're not turning into a "spam cop" too, are...

    Dear Deepwater,

What Deepwater said in his original post was: "Yours truly will be a direct dealer and will happily take care of my HR friends. I'll let you know when you can start placing orders and getting pricing." And later in another post: "Disclaimer - You don't have to buy them from me just because...

    New MXL Mic

I just went to the MXL site and noticed this: MXL 2006 I had heard that this mic was on it's way, but wasn't sure when they'd be out with it. Supposedly, the difference between this and their other mics is that it actually has some decent parts in it instead of the same old junk (that means I...

    AT4060 a few questions.

That sounds like a good plan – I just don’t think you can go wrong with an AT 4060 at a good price. But OTOH, the ADK CE is a good sounding mic, too. Certainly compare them if you can. When you do, if at all possible, compare them by tracking your voice, burning a CD, and then take it home and...

    AT4060 a few questions.

Another vote for the AT4060. From what I heard on the 3D Mic CD, I agree with Ronan. Everyone here seems to favor the AT4060, so why are you still asking? If you need a great tube mic and can afford one (at any price!) don't walk, but run out and get an AT4060 today! :)

OK, so who has tried the Nady ribbon??

Jaguarmusicboy, thanks for posting your opinion on this mic.

OK, so who has tried the Nady ribbon??

Ribbons inherently exhibit figure 8 patterns simply because the ribbon picks up sounds fairly equal from both the front and the rear, but 180 degrees out of phase. That’s why they are almost completely dead to sound sources on either side – the same sound hits both sides and they cancel each...

Man, I am still listening to that clip! This is a great thread, btw. It's not too often we discuss mic'ing pianos.

Listen to MXL V67 on Grand Piano

Sounds GREAT to me! The room sounds fine. I can see where some would have a preference for more of a "concert hall" sound, but it sounds perfectly natural as is - I wouldn't touch it. I love the hi-lo stereo sound. Remember - good recordings are 5-10% gear and 90-95% talent. I'd say you have...
