    George Michael/Freddie Mercury vocal effect

Are you talking about the harmonies? I know for all the big harmonies like on bohemian rhapsody, they all recorded their vocal parts (yup, they ALL could sing like that!) 4 times over, so the ended up with 16 tracks of a 4 part harmony. That way it sounds like a huge group.

    reason, cubase or motif?

You should check out reason drum kits 2.0 and the pianos and abbey roads addons. Definitely not geared toward "electronic" type stuff, and amazing sounding too! I personally love the workflow in Reason. I find the midi much easier to work with than most sequencers and easy to get in to and...

    Problem with mic'ing drummer's snare

Is it a space issue? Like you just can't get the stand where you want it? Try getting in underneath the high hat from the drummer's left side. I like doing this anyways as it minimizes hat leakage into the snare. Also, this way I can line the snare mic up with the floor tom mic so that...

So now that we're in the age of "free music" and downloading full albums...

Yes, I wish this was the way people thought. But the way it seems to work is that people just want whatever they can quickly download and stick on their ipod. They've already tried the "super-high-quality" version. That's what DVDA and SACD was. It was a nonstarter, because non-audiophiles...

    getting sponsers

My last band got hooked up by a local shop. We were spending lots of money every week on gear/strings/picks/stands... you name it. Eventually we just told him "Hey, give us a banner and some t-shirts and we'll tell every kid we meet around here to go to your store." He ended up getting enough...

So now that we're in the age of "free music" and downloading full albums...

Any commercial record - even the NIN - has been mastered. "Mastering" doesn't always mean "crazy loudness wars brickwall limiting." Even a brickwall limited master by a decent ME will translate better on many systems than an unmastered mix. I doubt we'll ever see major artists putting out...

    Post your favorite production tricks!

One thing I've been using lately is using the snare to key a compressor on distorted guitar submix. This way I can duck the guitars a bit whenever the snare is hit so that it comes through the mix a bit nicer without having to carve the guitars up too much.

    Using two interfaces for mastering

Isn't what you're proposing actually the reason why we have dither in the first place?? If you're running a 24/96 out to analog and then back into digital at 16/44 you're going to have a completely different signal. The new format won't have room for the dynamic range that it's being sent so...

Anyone Here Not Using 'Proper' Monitors?

I've got a pair of m-audio dx-4's. I would hardly call these "studio monitors." More like "okay sounding computer speakers." That being said, I've gotten quite used to their shortcomings and can mix on them. I've mixed on KRK VXT8's and NS10s. I liked the idea of the NS10's the best...

    M-Audio Axiom 61

Again, are you trying to power the controller off the usb? Or is the DC power supply plugged in? This kind of sounds like maybe the controller isn't getting enough juice and therefore not quite working. Eh?

Doesn't USB 1.1 not supply power? Are you using the dc power for the keyboard too?

    Recording first demo issues!

You're plugging a mic signal into something designed for a line signal. Go get an xlr-xlr cable and plug it into the xlr input on the mixer.

    Anyone use GarageBand???

I'm a protools/reason guy, but my cowriter uses GB just because it's so simple and user friendly. I just get her to bounce everything she does to stereo stems for me to mix in PT. I really, really, like the simple interface of garageband, but it doesn't have the editing/mixing flexibility that...

    Kick issues.

Well, I guess it would depend on the type of music that you're working with. For most of the stuff I do, I want my drums pretty much right on the grid anyways, so its no problem to grab another section and slide it over. In fact, from an arrangement standpoint, I prefer to work this way. But I...

    Kick issues.

The first thing I would try is a cut and paste approach. Single hits, or maybe there is a similar measure elsewhere in the song you can just drag over in grid mode. Keep in mind that you'll have to edit all the drum tracks together. If the kick is too hard on the kick track, it's also too...

    Vocal Recording Help..

If it sounds good until you put a mastering plugin on your master fader, don't do that! Instead, splurge for a mastering engineer. I think this would be way more worthwhile than upgrading anything in your signal chain. It's true, an sm7b might be more appropriate for what you're doing... I've...
