Which Naiant mic/how to record upright piano?

I'd say how you record piano will be determined by how you want it to fit in a mix. If it's a super dense, busy mix, I'd say just go mono with it. If its a sparse mix, maybe piano, drums, bass, vocals, I'd go stereo. From there you can determine what mic setup to use. Do you want a big roomy...

will this comp be good for pro tools

As far as the 002 vs 003, the differences are largely cosmetic, although apparently the 003 has a more accurate internal clock. I'm not sure but I think the 003 has different pre's than the 002, but the difference would probably be subjective as to which one is "better" than the other as far as...

will this comp be good for pro tools

Digidesign hasn't certified PTLE for leopard yet. Actually, the only thing that they have certified is HD on leopard, but only if you're running an 8 core mac pro. What I've seen from people running PT on leopard runs the gambit from no problems at all, to occasional hiccups, to missing menu...

    SPDIF Question...

SPDIF is digital, your record player is analog. Unless your turntable is super hightech and has a SPDIF out, you'll have to go in a different way. My mbox 2 pro has a phono input built-in, but I'm not sure if the 003 has this or not.

will this comp be good for pro tools

I don't know if they're still up, but the mac store had some sick deals on newer imacs that they're trying to get rid of before upgrading the line. I would be very frightened to try and get PT up and running on a pc. You have to take EVERY component into careful consideration. ESPECIALLY the...

Looking to hook up keyboard to computer...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Yamaha has all those drivers online. My co-writer has a yamaha home piano deal and we got her usb stuff going with the online drivers.

Firewire 1814 users: How are you recording drums?

How does the front sound compared to the back if you just plug a mic straight into the xlr input on the front? Those front inputs are preamps. It doesn't look like there is a way to bypass these, so when you're going from the mackie to the front input, you're amping it twice. This will colour...

Firewire 1814 users: How are you recording drums?

Okay, can you just walk through your whole setup for what you're trying to do? What hooks up to what etc?

A Quick Note to Leopard 10.5.x with Pro Tools LE 7.4 Users

I think you really just got lucky. I'm in school with classmates trying to run 7.4 in leopard. VERY mixed results. Some people have no issues, some have buggy menus, some have random crashes and the grey screen of death. I wouldn't say its safe to upgrade to leopard just based on your...

Question to anyone using the Firewire 1814

If you're going into the xlr's on the 1418, they're going through another preamp, so they're being amped twice, which would result in a different sound.

Question to anyone using the Firewire 1814

Well, you're using different preamps, so it's going to be a different sound. Your 610 should (hopefully!) sound a lot different from the builtin m-audio pres.

    reason, cubase or motif?

Sounds like you had a pretty bad experience. Also sounds like an old school/new school workflow type situation. For me, I've had computers since I was like 4 years old and if something goes wrong with it, I know how to fix it. Plus, I know how to make sure nothing will go wrong in the first...

    Firebox vs DMP3 vs Firebox + DMP3

I don't see why it would be "wrong" to do this... Yeah, a preamp is looking for mic level and boosting it to line level, but if you needed more gain, then it wouldn't be line level yet. Obviously, it'd be nice to have a high gain pre, but not everyone does. This would work fine too.

    Firebox vs DMP3 vs Firebox + DMP3

Well, you could plug preamp into preamp if you needed more gain, couldn't you? Also, the firebox has line inputs, so you could hook the dmp3 up to those for 2 more mic inputs. Doesn't the dmp3 have spdif? You can hook up to the firebox via spdif too!

    advice for vocal mic

Both the mics I recommended are above the price range you've listed, so I should also mention... If you're taking this seriously, you really don't want to skimp on mics. Spending a bit more money will get you much higher quality microphones that will last as you develop your skills. If you...

    so nobody uses Sonar?

Was all about Sonar, then I went to school and am forced to use pro tools. Yes, they basically do the same thing, but 8 years of cakewalk means that most of my usual habits make pro tools do wierd things!!!

    Which midi keyboard.

Most hammer action controllers I've heard are definitely "clunky" sounding. That's the price you pay for it to feel like a piano! Have you tried putting some sort of baffle between the keyboard and her mic? Another way to avoid this would just be to work with it. Like you've got the actual...
