looking for a program to adjust midi file durations and note start times.

The interface runs at 31.25 kbps, not the program controlling it. Remember that the transmission is asynchronous, which means a byte (along with its accompanying start /stop bits) can commence at any moment that the program sends it. Assuming we're not dealing with a 'log jam'. i.e. a surfeit...

    what do i do?

Yup, Music Creator 6, the older version for XP, is currently on special download offer over at CakeWalk's site. Wrapped up with other stuff, if you so choose. A real bargain, and an entry point into Sonar if you later decide upon that. It's not half bad = pretty good. Just my 2 cents (or...

    Keyboard USB to MIDI

Unfortunately not. One needs to understand that USB (not MIDI) is driven by a controller chip. (That's for USB standards 1.1 (the earliest) and 2.0, USB 3 is different, more of this later.) This controller chip administers the flow of data back and forth. The, much cheaper, responder chip sits...

    The Basic Basics of MIDI

(Nothing I write is meant to be offensive, nor to be taken personally!) Undoubtedly the list of important controllers probably covers the most important ones, but ... and you know there must be a but ... I'd have to add: GM System On - to reset ALL controllers (N.B. Reset All controllers...

    Yamaha MU90R dilema

Yup, a PCI card should do the trick. Then you'll need to load the Yamaha driver for MIDI via RS232. Regards, John.

    The Basic Basics of MIDI

I think it fair to say that GPO4 probably wasn't intended for beginners! Although, if you use the notation program Finale, it's all done for you as you enter e.g. a 'slur' mark, the notes are overlapped, and the MIDI legato 'pedal' is pressed and released as required. When you mark the score as...

    Yamaha MU90R dilema

The difficulty with using the RS232 D sub port is that Yamaha developed driver software to allow it to drive MIDI across it, I think at 38.4 kbps. MIDI itself runs more slowly. Using a USB to RS232 adapter means the drivers would have to work to USB and I don't think they do that. The answer is...

    The Basic Basics of MIDI

Actually, not that it matters, it was the 1980s, with the specification being published in '83. (30 years old last year!) The original work was done by Dave Smith of Prophet 5 fame. Then a guy (who's name I forget) from Roland got involved too. The two of them are generally credited with its...

    Expression vs. Volume

Expression versus channel volume. Hi, The simple answer is 'it depends upon the sample player'. Back in the older days of hardware sound modules (and sound cards) it was pretty well universal (not totally) that 'note on velocity' controlled not only the loudness of a note but also the timbre...

“Live Jukebox” using MIDI to run MS Excell, (or word)

Nice idea, but there are some issues with implementation. The actual switches on the keyboard, typically these days, are tiny, printed circuit board mounted, encapsulated, compressible, rubber things. None-too-easy to connect to I'd have thought. And, I suspect, if you do connect directly to...

    Which MIDI Keyboard Controller?

Perhaps another to consider is the Novation Impulse 61 which is a little more pricey. There are several good reviews of the Impulse series around if you Google "Novation Impulse review". Many comment upon the "feel "of the keyboard being better than average. It has the advantage of having...

    MIDI purchase: ?????

You don't say whether the 300 is dollars, or Euros, or pounds. My own take, to get something halfway reasonable, is to get something that includes faders (9) knobs (8) and drum pads (8). The M-audio Axiom is very popular, as is the Novation Impulse. My preference is for the latter, as I prefer...

    MIDI two Alesis D4s together

Connect the MIDI out of the SR16 to the MIDI in of the 1st D4, then the MIDI thru of that to the MIdI in of the 2nd D4, a kinda daisy chain. Make sure that the D4s are set to trigger only the drum notes on the 1st and the cymbals on the 2nd. I believe that should work. SysExJohn.

How to use MIDI-Bank/Program-Change and DAW-Software

VST instruments cannot (in the main) be changed with Bank/Program changes. They must be done manually. There are a very few exceptions, I believe. SysExJohn.

My Brass and woods sounds awfull

I'm a fan of the Garritan libraries. GPO4 for classical sounds. JABB3 for jazz and big band. COMB for concert and marching band. You have to know how to use the MIDI controllers to get the best out of them, but the results can be astonishing. There's lots of demos at the Garritan web site...

    MIDI set up latency help!

Some decoding for you. SMPTE = the society of motion picture and television engineers. With this switched on the timing information within a MIDI file is held in the format needed for synchronisation with film and television. Leave this off unless you know you need it. MTC = MIDI time code...

    RCA, 1/4, or XLR?

Simply put the electrical output from a microphone (and a phono cartridge) is very small, often measured in microvolts. It therefore needs significant pre-amplification before adding to the mixer's buss. Pro (low impedance) microphones need to see an impedance of around 1kilohm. They will use...

Help with an assignment about MIDI?

May I suggest that you start by going here CV/Gate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia it will explain the basics and the hyperlinks will take you to no end of places that will give you more detailed information. A piece of advice. Don't cut and paste from any of these sites. Many educators...
