    MS-16 story

Hey thanks for the head's up on that plugin Cory. I'll download it tonight. I now have a PC in my basement so I can use it. (After years of being a Macintosh partisan i've come to realize that I despise all computer manufacturing corporations equally:)).

    Tascam 58-OB Story...

hmmm I'd perhaps keep my eyes peeled for a dbx163 or 163x compressor. They're usually very cheap ($40-60ish) and I find they work great as bass direct boxes (even if you'd rather not compress the bass). You could patch it directly into the 58. Just an idea...

No I don't have a scope, I was just trying for a ballpark adjustment to see if it works ok. at this point I don't really feel confident monkeying with the heads. Would you say it's fairly easy to learn how to do? There's a great tape tech in my neighbourhood who i'll call. I just tried checking...

Best of luck with the relay replacement Ethan. A replay was bad on one of my 58-OB's cards and I was too intimidated by the prospect of replacing it so i just got a new card. A little update on my MS-16: I replaced the bias feeder caps with the 180pf poly film ones for all the channel cards...

    Tascam 58-OB Story...

Hey Cory, have you had a chance to read Jay McKnight's paper on demagnetizing? Interesting stuff. http://home.flash.net/~mrltapes/mcknight_demag.pdf

    Tascam 58-OB Story...

just a thought-- have you thoroughly demagnetized both heads? One of the AES papers on the MRL site says that it's possible for a head to be partially magnetized (ie some channels, but not others) and head magnetization is a possible cause of click-y sounds. i would have guessed the relays if...

Hey thanks so much for checking out that part for me ethan. This is a great thread. I'll be sure to keep you posted on this mod. I plan on using ATR tape on the machine.

    Daptone recording studios...

I think Gabriel Roth (Bosco "Bass" Mann) is an amazing producer. I share his strong prejudice that the art of record making, on a whole, has gotten consistently worse since the sixties. :D

    Quantegy rides again???!!?!?

Just a little side note, I spoke to Mike Spitz and he told me he actually prefers the ATR tape set for a +6 operating level. He's a fan of keeping all the transients intact.

OK What is this crap on my Otari mx70

Unfortunately they don't say what the old tapes with blue dots were, but this bit tells you the code for modern MRLs (all three of my MRLs are on SM911 stock): "1.2.9 Blank Tape Stock: The manufacturers of professional analog audio tape have been — how should we put it? — in a state of flux...

    Quantegy rides again???!!?!?

are you sure? i thought the page looked like this until recently: http://web.archive.org/web/20070806063756/http://www.quantegy.com/index.html I'm not sure though. That snapshot is from august (the most recent archive.org entry available)

OK What is this crap on my Otari mx70

hmmm I'm inclined to think madAudio is right. When I bought my MX5050 2track the owner thought there was a transport issue with the machine, but the only the problem was that some sticky shed tape had been run through it. The crap on the guides looked a lot like your picture. after very...

    MS-16 story

hey ethan and cjacek, thanks so much for taking a look at the heads. I took your advice and ordered a roller from terry witt. i posted a question about the bias cap upgrade over at the electrical audio forum as there seems to quite a few technical-minded ms-16 users how hang out there. here...

    Otari mx70 vs Tascam ms16

Talldog, I'd recommend you call MRL and ask what tape stock was used. There's usually a coloured dot sticker that corresponds with the tape stock. You can reference the tape type to the sticky shed 'sticky' on this very message board.

getting my head(stack) examined Hi all, If any of you folks has an idea of how to diagnose the health of a headstack by looking at a photo, I'd really appreciate ya taking a gander at these: http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterjwoodford/sets/72157606277465176/ (I'd also appreciate any tips on...

    shiny pinch roller

Thanks for the tip Danny, I have a picture of that stuff in my old Tascam Portastudio's manual. I'll keep my eyes peeled. Do you find it makes the roller 'rubber-ier' when it gets a bit hardened, or have you never had to contend with that problem?
