hmmm I'd perhaps keep my eyes peeled for a dbx163 or 163x compressor. They're usually very cheap ($40-60ish) and I find they work great as bass direct boxes (even if you'd rather not compress the bass). You could patch it directly into the 58. Just an idea...

just a thought-- have you thoroughly demagnetized both heads? One of the AES papers on the MRL site says that it's possible for a head to be partially magnetized (ie some channels, but not others) and head magnetization is a possible cause of click-y sounds. i would have guessed the relays if...

I think Gabriel Roth (Bosco "Bass" Mann) is an amazing producer. I share his strong prejudice that the art of record making, on a whole, has gotten consistently worse since the sixties. :D

Just a little side note, I spoke to Mike Spitz and he told me he actually prefers the ATR tape set for a +6 operating level. He's a fan of keeping all the transients intact.

Talldog, I'd recommend you call MRL and ask what tape stock was used. There's usually a coloured dot sticker that corresponds with the tape stock. You can reference the tape type to the sticky shed 'sticky' on this very message board.

Thanks for the tip Danny, I have a picture of that stuff in my old Tascam Portastudio's manual. I'll keep my eyes peeled. Do you find it makes the roller 'rubber-ier' when it gets a bit hardened, or have you never had to contend with that problem?
