hey folks,
anyone tried any of those stand-alone type cd burners? like the philips, etc. just moved and space is fairly tight and i'm in between computers to boot. so that is a tempting solution for a time. any input appreciated. thanks!

ps - anyone in socal/la want to give a midwestern...
hey amit,
depending on how you run your guitar effects, you can use a rack mount comp for both as long as you send it line level signal. if you learn to use compression properly, ie the same settings don't work for guitar and vox :-), it can really be the key factor in a cohesive recording. if...
hey mutt,
a fellow 564 user, cool! i also use the tubepac and as panny recommended, use the 1/4" inputs from your tubepac to the 1/4" inputs on your 564. assuming you have a decent mic (and with instruments too) you will hear a HUGE difference. you'll never use the 564 pre's again :-) the...
hey mike,
go to the website for the 'looper's delight' listserv at http://www.annihilist.com and look for the vortex section. more info than you could dream of!
tony
yep, i completely agree with dom! the last 'serious' project i worked on we tracked in adat (yeah, i know) and mixed down to both 1" 2 track and dat through an old mci board and various other 'pro' outboard gear. it was amazing how much better the analog master (1" 2 track) sounded compared to...
thanks for all the info guys!
any hints on evaluating heads? as i've never owned a reel recorder, i'm not quite sure what to look for. also, there are lots of other tascam and fostex models around fs, but i haven't seen any tsr-8 recorders fs yet. anyone familiar with any other models in the...
hey dom,
that makes sense. i guess we were looking for the mud in those sessions :-) loss of very high end is a big deal in my stuff, but i really like what the tape did for the lows and mids. good advice on the heads too. thanks!
tony
thanks dom! wow, i had no idea heads would be that expensive. that means they are arguably more expensive than a complete used recorder. given proper care, how many hours should be expected out of new heads?
thanks for the great advice,
tony
thanks emeric! that gives me a good place to start. thanks for the ebay tip too. i really wanted to get an idea of what reel recorders are selling for as i have no real ;-) experience with them. what type of i/o's does the tsr-8 have? thanks again!
tony
hey folks,
i spent some time with a tascam 1/2" 8 track reel to reel recorder (not sure of the model #) the past couple of nights and loved it! fwiw, i was recording bass guitar and some drums programs i had made using acid. this was at a friends home studio which is all analog, i've been using...
hey rdpete,
can you elaborate a bit? so exactly how does it run better on a pc? any problems, limitations, ect on a mac? i am interested but need to know a bit more first. thanks!
tony
hey, anyone used this? a friend mentioned that it can handle midi time code and could be synched up in time with other midi equipment like samplers, loopers, etc. anyone done it? any general opinions on it?
thanks!
tony
ahhh, finally, a mac thread! i asked dragon about starting a mac forum but no go yet...
i have a g4 and digi 001 and it rocks! the 001 is selling for $800 now and it has hardware AND software. it's a great deal for the money. as the interface already has 2 mic pre's, you really don't need a...
hey whiskey,
some good points have already been made, but you may have a problem in your signal path as well. your compressor (and eq) wants to see a line level signal rather than the signal coming from your bass. try going into a direct box, then from the direct box xlr to your mixing board...
when my studio was in a remote space, iow, not in my home, i used event bas monitors. GREAT monitors. when i scaled down and moved the 'studio' to a small room off the bedroom, i bought event ps5's. for the money and size, they are incredible. i'd guess they down to about 45-50. i paid about...
hey shailat,
for the money, they're ok. i'd say they sound about as good as the pre's on my little mackie 1202vlz mixer. i prefer to use a dedicated pre. even the little art tube mp is a huge improvement over the mackie or digi 001 pre's. (fwiw, the mics i've been using are a rode nt2, oktava...
just in case anyone is listening :-), i reply to my own q. looks like griffin in nashville (http://www.griffin.com) is making a little stereo usb a/d converter for $25 and swissonic (http://www.swissonic.com) is making a full blown 8 i/o usb converter/mixer for $700. both are mac compatible...
hey fogg,
nope, i guess i wasn't clear enough, sorry. i mean, i need an external a/d converter that will use the usb port on my ibook and imook to input the audio signal. opcode makes a cool one and so does rolan/edirol. but of course, neither are mac compatible :-(
about 8th street, they are...
