    Limiters

So all I would have to do is get the ratio at 10:1 and that would stop all the peaks going through the P.A. from the toms? Wouldnt I have to do something wih all the other knobs, attack, release etc...?

    Limiters

Sorry I meant to say that I wouldnt mind limiting the toms in a live situation, not for recording.

    Limiters

I have just acquired a very cheap four channel compressor. Someone told me that you can use them as limiters as well. How would I set the controls to limit something like toms on a drumkit?

    Track order

Yep. Guitarist I am indeed, but the drums occupy only one track on the recorder. The "Demo" I am doing isnt at all serious really. No one will hear it apart from us, the band. The drums were recorded in the drummers garage on his electronic kit, through the stereo outs into one track of the...

    Recording toms

I plan to have two SDC as overheads when recording drums, and also mics underneath the two rack toms. Since both the OH mics and under mics will capture the toms, would the phasing of the OH have to be reversed so as not to get a thin sound?

    panning drums

Thanks for the advice chaps. Having decided that the kick and snare would be panned in the middle with overheads far left and right, with toms at 11 and 1 o clock respectively, what about the rest? We are two guitars, bass, lead vocal and backing vocal. Where to position?

    panning drums

In answer to how many mics.... A mic on the snare, one on the two rack toms, one on the floor tom, one on the kick, two condensers spaced apart over the cymbals, one condenser close micing the ride.

    panning drums

Are there any basic rules to follow when panning drums? I ask this as I am about to record my band onto an eight tack reel to reel and dont want any frequencies clashing. My band consists of lead vocal, backing vocals, two guitars, bass and drums. Heavy rock is what we do! If you could picture...

    Muddy toms sound

How do you fix muddy toms in the mix? I recorded my band of drums, guitar and bass on my eight track analogue machine. The kit sounded good in isolation with the toms nice and clear. I bring up the guitar and bass and the toms almost dissapear. Any ideas for a beginner? Thanks.

    compressing overheads

I actually want to try and even out the cymbals. On playing back the tape, the crash cymbal is a bit louder than the others.

    compressing overheads

What settings are best whilst trying to compress overheads on a kit? The only compressor at my disposal is an Alesis Nanocompressor. Can I get results with it? Having recorded the drums onto four tracks on my analogue eight track, the cymbals are on one track only. What would I set the...
