So all I would have to do is get the ratio at 10:1 and that would stop all the peaks going through the P.A. from the toms? Wouldnt I have to do something wih all the other knobs, attack, release etc...?

Sorry I meant to say that I wouldnt mind limiting the toms in a live situation, not for recording.

I have just acquired a very cheap four channel compressor. Someone told me that you can use them as limiters as well. How would I set the controls to limit something like toms on a drumkit?

I plan to have two SDC as overheads when recording drums, and also mics underneath the two rack toms. Since both the OH mics and under mics will capture the toms, would the phasing of the OH have to be reversed so as not to get a thin sound?

In answer to how many mics.... A mic on the snare, one on the two rack toms, one on the floor tom, one on the kick, two condensers spaced apart over the cymbals, one condenser close micing the ride.

How do you fix muddy toms in the mix? I recorded my band of drums, guitar and bass on my eight track analogue machine. The kit sounded good in isolation with the toms nice and clear. I bring up the guitar and bass and the toms almost dissapear. Any ideas for a beginner? Thanks.
