    EZ Drummer & Sonar

Got EZ drummer. Never used it before. I need to know if I have to use drum maps to use it, or should it just lay down like an audio track?

best way to record distorted vox

I would like to know the BEST way to record distorted vocals. Like fuzzed out tone, yet intelligible. Should I use a basic vocal track and effect it or start off with the sound with let's say a green bullet mic? Please respond if you have done this before. It's not as easy as just adding...

    EZ Drummer & Sonar question...

I bought EZ drummer and simple CANNOT get SONAR to recognize it. Toontrack says to to go Sonar's "global" settings and point Sonar to the EZ drummer under VST settings. Only problem...NO VST options anywhere. (PS this is SONAR 2) Toontrack can't get it resolved, cakewalk won't answer my query...

    metal recording tips

The clicking could be the strings hitting the pickups. Some guys like to have them as high as they can go.

    metal recording tips

Unless you use a Traben Array Attack. $400 new. Those things record so well it's unbelievable.

    decent tube preamp

Some solid advice going on here. The term "tube" seems to add a sense of greatness to any product. The tone doesn't always follow. There are so many factors involved with a piece of electronic equipment that effects its tone. For example, I have several tube amps. Some have the same tubes, yet...

    metal recording tips

Right on. Guitars gotta be big and strong. Scooped mids are acceptable for the Nu-metal sound. I don't care much for it myself, but some guys dig it. The drums are critical. The snare needs to have a mid-scooped tone if you will. Nice crack & big bottom. (Man, that just sounds bad to say it) The...

recording source effects vs adding after in the mix

Chibi hit it. I've yet to meet a guitarist (except for me..he he) that's not a tone bone freakziod. He probably doesn't feel that he can get the proper performance without that delay in there. So, let him have it. Chances are that nobody else will notice the difference. remember that if you...

    Recording resonator guitar

I've tried everything to get a great sound, but believe it or not, the Schatten NR-2 pickup puts out a fantastic reso tone. I record 2 channels. Same take. One with the Schatten and one with a good condenser pointed right at the cone.

Is it normal that recorded material doesnt sound like the monitoring?

Don't trust your monitoring system! Burn a copy of the track. Listen to it in 1. a car stereo 2. A good home stereo and 3. a cheap boom box. Then make the needed adjustments. Go back to your monitoring system and make a note of the sonic plane. A scary thing to do, but the final mix is the goal.

Great V/O condenser mic for $250: Rode NT-1 or others??

I think the Rode sounds "boxy" compared to my Blue Bluebird ($300 new, maybe $200-$250 used) It's a fabulous mic.

A question about processing and mixing distorted guitar

Tones can really be deceiving. Alone they might sound to you as perfect, but in a mix...:( I have always liked hot fuzzed out guitars with a sizzling high end. That is, until I hear it in a mix. I have never been one to admire that Marshall 100 watt on 10 sound alone, but you gotta agree that in...

    Blue Microphones BlueBird w/Preamp?

Strange that you are willing to spend a grand on a Robbie, but want to use a $300 mic. Now I have the Bluebird and love it, but if it were me, I'd get a better mic and settle for a lesser pre. I find it hard to believe that the little Robbie is really worth that much.

    Tube mic pre amps?

I have this argument with tube guys all the time. They say "if it don't have tubes...it's crap" I have had GREAT guitar tones from solid state amps. I have had terrible vocals from tube preamps as well. Richard Monroe has said it all. A great track can be had with a good mic and a cheap pre. A...

    Muddy Sounding Recordings!

    1. good equipment 2. good mics & placement 3. good plug-ins for EQ-ing tracks. This is all basic stuff. Even if you have good tracks, they can become muddy if you do not have the ear to configure them right in the mix. Engineering is an art. Either you got it or ya don't. Don't feel bad if ya...

    How loud should I mix????

My routine: 1. Mix with a low volume 2. Remix at moderate volume 3. Remix at high volume 4. Listen at lower volume again. 5. Burn a quick copy, listen to track in a good stereo, a car stereo, and a cheap boom box making notes on any issues. 6. Go back, fix problems, listen at all 3 volumes...

    Getting a huge guitar sound.

Aaahh. It's all coming together. I have never tried it, but I would like to try cranking up the amp to a moderate level, then placing a studio mic back about 3-5 feet. Right where your ears hear the "great tone". Our guitarist recorded his tracks when I was not there. The sound was boxy and...

    Getting a huge guitar sound.

try angling the mics across the speaker path. A dead center placement will result in thinner, tinnier tones. The mid tones are towards the middle of the cone and the basses are towards the outside. 45 degrees is the norm. Good luck.

    Getting a huge guitar sound.

The key for me is to record each guitar track twice. No copying the track. They should be very close, but not exact copies. You can even do 3 or 4 tracks. Then simply pan each one left and right anywhere from 50-100%. Also, make sure that the original track has good sonic clarity and level. A...
