    New Heads? Problem?

that's great that you got the issue resolved. just for the record, was he able to identify those markings in the first photo you posted? i'm curious how something like affects head performance (or if it's primarily cosmetic).

1500 Gauss bulk eraser... good enough??

thanks. i love that thing. i only weight like a buck forty but i somehow willed myself into lifting the damn thing by myself (i really should have learned from a near catastrophe involving: a nutcase [me], a tascam m520, and a staircase)... to quote graham gouldman: "the things we do for love"

    ampex 1" what?!

the heads are by far the most important and expensive part. 1" heads are particularly hard to come by... you'd also need a whole new set of guides. then pray that nothing is wrong with those unused amps. i'd also wonder if the original capstan motor is in there, or if they put a lighter duty one...

    New Heads? Problem?

that sounds like it might be a reasonable assessment to me, did you have a chance to go through the service manual section on tape path adjustments? That can make a huge difference.

    ampex 1" what?!

I called and indeed it is modified for 1/2" 4 track use. It was being used at a facility to dub cassette tapes. The 1" heads are missing.

1500 Gauss bulk eraser... good enough??

Hi, I recently picked up an old full-track Ampex AG-350 deck in a console (so far it's working perfectly ) and the seller threw in a TD-1B 1500 Gauss bulk eraser. It's like this one: http://www.audiolabelectronics.com/TD-1b.htm I was wondering what tape formats i could reasonably expect to...

    Re-capping my board

I'd highly recommend getting a tech over and doing one channel... watch him like a hawk and ask questions. For a big job like recapping a whole board, a hakko vacuum desoldering gun would be a nice luxury. it could help prevent you from lifting traces. also, what kind of iron do you have? if...

Opinions on the condition of this head

yup. Some serious experts contribute there, like Jay McKnight and some 3M magnetic tape division alumni.

Opinions on the condition of this head

+1 The Ampex List is great (unlike the late-and-not-lamented-uber-uptight Studer List). And one of the regular posters there, Steve Puntolillo of Sonicraft, is like a bizarro sweetbeats with his all his crazy restoration projects. :D Fun stuff to follow.

    Ampex AG-440 Differences

This great old Ampex white paper has a table that shows the theoretical signal-to-noise ratio difference with with difference track configurations: http://ftp.ampex.com/ampex/manuals/audio/theory/ampex.basic.concepts.of.tape.recording.pdf I asked Greg Norman about the track width issue when he...

In case any of you folks missed it, Larry Crane of Tape Op blogged about the Quantegy comeback awhile ago and one of the Quantegy people posted this comment: I wonder who'd be the OEM?

    Deoxit is my friend

I think that high pressure would be helpful. For a particularly nasty pot you're going to want a 'flushing' action as well as a contact cleaner proper. caig has a nice little messageboard for support. I think this thread might help you out: http://www.caig.com/caigbb/view_topic.php?id=87&forum_id=1

Using the spring reverb from a Fender twin reverb amp as an external effect

Hi, I've used my twin for vocal reverb plenty, i think it sounds great. I had great success using a Groove Tubes speaker Emulator in order to run the amp at line level, bypassing the speaker cab. IMO the Speaker Emulator is overpriced (I was lucky enough to find one for $100 but they sell for...
