    Tascam 388 Story...

My dream house would have one built into a wall in every room.

Nice stuff JP! It kinda reminds of Message From the Country-era Move. The MSR-24 sounds great. One of my fav 90s LPs, Imperial FFRR, was recorded on one of those. Did you see that Wharton Tiers Tape Op interview where he alluded to preferring the MSR-24 to the Studer a80 at Sonic Youth's studio...

    2" Scotch 996

That's interesting Miroslav. In my case, it wouldn't allow the machine to fast wind at anywhere near full speed. Just a little update: It did respond to baking. Unfortunately a few mixes were ruined by the drag caused by stickiness.

    2" Scotch 996

Slight bummer update: I bought a box of 1/4" 996 pancakes in 2009. They all worked fine at the time but I tried using the last remaining one yesterday and I'm very sad to say it was sticky in a way that's very similar to bad Ampex 456 (thought it didn't completely jam the transport like severe...

    2" Scotch 996

I've had to transfer a few reels of 996 (one 1" and two 1/4") with SSS-like problems. The issues were remedied by leaving the reels in an oven overnight with a 100watt bulb on in place of the appliance bulb. I kept a thermometer/humidity gauge in the oven and positioned the tapes away from the...

    1966 Sunset Sound Ampex AG-300 1" 8-track

Wow congrats on scoring that amazing deck! I have an AG350 full track machine that I use a fair bit (mostly for echo so far--haven't had a chance to mix to mono yet). I'd say it's the nicest sounding machine I have. Even the line-amp seem to a subtle euphonic tone. Out of curiosity, does this...

    Studer 169 direct out

Hi Igor, I'm just using the signalling jacks. I had to make a snake to the patch bay with banana plugs on one end.

    Studer 169 direct out

Hi Igor, Roginator's tip worked like a charm for me. The insert was unaffected. If you can find the male and female cable mount versions of the crimp connectors that Studer used, you don't even need to solder or permanently anything--just make a little extender for the wire (i think it's red...

    Opinions on Tapes

my experiences mirror Miroslav's (pardon the alliteration): 499: never a prob 996: mostly good (my fav stock, in fact), but I've encountered the odd slightly sticky reel

    Studer 169 direct out

oh I forgot to mention... Just in case you didn't notice in the manual: the insert point is -10dBu which is equal to -12.2dBv rather than the -10dBV nominal level for most matchboxes. A really small (probably unimportant) detail, but I thought it was worth bringing up for the sake of precision.

    Studer 169 direct out

good advice from JP... I have a studer 169 into 1"-8-track setup myself. I wrote a longish blog post about it here: The Bottle Garden » Blog Archive » Studer 169 Console Linked Pair Restoration/Installation Odyssey Basically, there's a non-invasive mod where you can have a post-fader direct out...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

Hey thanks JP, really appreciate that. And yeah, it's my band (along with my girlfriend and another friend on drums). I've always enjoyed the songs you've posted here. Sometimes it reminds of a fusion of couple of my favs: Todd Rundgren (good era) and The Cleaners From Venus (but better...

    help with tape travel adjustment

Sonically it's tough to do a fair comparison, my MX70 is a one-inch 8-track. I've got to say that the Tascam has been a true workhorse while the Otari required new relays (the unsealed relays were corroded and created this weird, well documented, 'space ghost noise') and expensive proprietary...

    help with tape travel adjustment

You're right, the specified tension does feel awful tight compared to my other 1" machine (Otari MX-70). I'd never considered that it could be an error. Pure speculation: maybe they spec'd it that high because the motors are fairly weak (my biggest complaint with a machine that's in most...

    help with tape travel adjustment

Hey it sounds like you're on the right path. Out of curiosity, were you able to adjust the tension to spec with only the trimpots? The takeup tension was far too low in mine and I had to adjust the spring it get it in the correct range. A friend's MS-16 also needed the spring adjusted on the...

sorry misread your question. The tape was riding up the last guide prior to the capstan/pinch roller.

    Wow & Flutter Meters

thanks for the info (and glad to hear your machine spec-ed out nicely). I was curious because there's a 3m/mincom wow/flutter meter for sale in a radio shop in my neighbourhood. I had noticed that MRL sell 'flutter tapes' but it's good to know that they're not required for at least some...

    help with tape travel adjustment

good luck resolving this fgonza2, hope it's not as tricky as it sounds. I had a similar issue that I was in fact able to fix by adjusting the capstan zenith (required shimming one or two of the bolts--it's described in the manual).

    Wow & Flutter Meters

Just out of curiosity, do you require a test tape with 3150hz or can you feed the machine that frequency and do the adjustment while listening off the repro head?
