thanks for the help
I really appreciate it alot when you guys take time to answer what I know must seem like very basic questions. Interesting how there are so many different opinions on these topics, which is very educational (in a confusing sorta way.) ha, ha!
Thanks again!
I need to know if it is possible, and HOW to hook up a set of non-powered Bose speakers to a PC. The new computer I'm getting doesn't include speakers, and I'd prefer to wait 'til the budget allows to buy decent powered monitors, and use what I have in the meantime.
I already own a Peavey 4...
thanks Gidge!
What a concept! Would you or anybody else be willing to elaborate on how I would use either of those as a preamp??
Like exactly how to route everything, etc...??
Sorry if that's a really basic question...which I know it is ;-)
I really didn't know that was an option. But it...
I have never recorded directly onto my PC before. I've used either a PortaStudio or MR8 and then dumped WAVs onto the computer.
I want to experiment with going direct to the PC.
So, here's my question: Can I simply use my lo-Z to Hi-Z adapter and then a 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adapter to be...
maybe people are tired of negativity??
I've only been posting to this site for about a month now, and for the most part have gotten a lot of helpful and kind responses. Thank you very much!
However, I know I hesitate to participate at times, and have chosen not to share any of my songs in this...
Bring on the manning1 book!!!
But until then, I'm starting my own manning1 collection.... a folder dedicated to all the wonderful tips he is sharing with us.
Especially appreciate the encouragement to try some "old fashioned" recording methods.
My stairwell, and stone hearth are two of my...
One thing that will keep her interested is to work on songs she already knows and likes. Find the easiest songs by her favorite bands. That will give a sense of accomplishment early on and demystify things a bit. Of course a few basic chords are necessary
first. Have fun!

simple and cheap and usually works
Try a strip of suede leather about 1/2 inch by 4 inches attached to the batter head with a piece of tape. Seems to take out the ring without affecting the good aspects of the steel snare drum sound. works for me. good luck!
thanks manning1
Very cool of you to take time to share all that valuable info! And thanks for your responses to my other posts as well.
BTW, I checked out a few of your songs. Cool stuff. Kind of a Kinks meets The Ventures sort of vibe(at least the tunes I selected.) Rock on!
This is my understanding of it...
...that music CD's and data CD's are exactly alike. EXCEPT the stereo-component-type CD burners will not recognize/read the data CD's because they do not have the little logo on it that says "recordable" that enables the device to read it.
I've read several...
My MR-8 came with OS v1.05 . (I'm honestly not sure what that means exactly)
Is there any reason why I should upgrade to v1.10? I don't want to do any unnecessary tech stuff (and risk messing something up) that I don't have to , but if there are advantages, I'd like to know what they are...
I'm afraid your card may not work properly with the MR-8. I haven't not tried to upgrade mine, but others have attributed the skipping problem to an incompatible card.
Here's a link to the ones Fostex has OK'd and apparently it's very important to stick with one of those...
thanks
Green Hornet & manning1,
I appreciate you all taking time to share your thoughts. I just seem to be agonizing over this decision right now.
I think what concerns me most about going the PC route, is that I am extremely "right brained" and only have average computer skills, at best. I...
interesting concept!
Hey JV,
I don't know if the panning idea will increase fidelity or not, but it's a cool idea. If you try it, please share the results.
Here's one "trick" that I use when I am capturing a song using voice and an acoustic/electric guitar recorded simultaneously:
Go...
I would like to hear different people's opinions on stand alone DAW's compared to PC based recording systems. Anyone willing to share opinions, ideas, experience??
I'm currently trying to decide which kind of system to invest in. My primary goals are to be able to record acoustic drums and/or a...
good points & bad points
I'm a new owner of an MR-8.
I think the sound quality is excellent, and it is very easy to learn the basics. However, I personally find the storage issue in general to be a MAJOR PROBLEM. Unless you want to spend a lot of time transferring tracks to PC for mixing and...
ABSOLUTELY!
I've been pondering this a lot lately. I have no doubt that the average listen's ears are being affected by the pasturization/homogenization of sound today!
I wonder in the future how many people will actually know what a real live set of acoustic drums sounds like. That makes me...
