I'd like to use Reason 3.0 on my laptop. Not sure if it's capable.

I've been using Reason 3 on my iBook G4 with no issues. I have a 1.2 Ghz PPC proc and 1.25 GB of RAM (Maxed). I also run my OS and all my audio files from an FW external drive. My iBook's internal drive is 4200 rpm and was way too slow. You will definately need to get the RAM upgrade. Any...

    ntrack flawed

I agree. I only visit the n-track forum for nostalgia purposes because I haven't actually used it as a primary DAW in a few years. I think its good to remeber that your DAW is just a tool for capturing and manipulating sound and music. It is good to keep multiple tools in the toolbox...

    Nuendo anyone?

He said he got it from a friend. I assume he means he didn't pay full price. Secondly, how are you supposed to learn to use a program like that before you buy it? You have to get your hands on it to learn it. Just DL the manual if your friend didn't send it with the app, and you may want to...

    Sonar v.s ProTools

It's weird but these programs gain a certain rep over the years and that rep stays with them for a very long time. Pro Tools has developed a mystique over the last few years that it is THE DAW software and now that reputation has led to an unfortunate situation where the money people think that...

    ntrack flawed

Actually, Nuendo/Cubase, SONAR, and Pro Tools are all buggy in different areas. Just go check out the forums for each one and you'll find them. This is why Pro Tools has their "cs" releases. These are releases to fix specific bugs and they come with a disclaimer that they may in fact CAUSE...

soundcard recording quality: $10 sblive vs everything else

SBLive is just fine for demos and composing with virtual instruments. But as mentioned above, SBLive is not designed to produce top quality recordings and so its converters are not up to par. Not to metion that the SBLive records only in 16bit. There is definitely an audible difference between...

protools vs. DP vs. Logic Pro

I have no experience with DP, but I have Logic Express and Pro Tools 7 M-powered and the bottom line is that they both kick ass, just in different ways. I use Logic for any midi/virtual instrument project, and PT for just about everything else. PT is just a bit awkward in dealing with midi...

    Apple or PC?

Bottom Line: Use whatever system you are most comfortable with. There is no other right answer.

    File Management?

The only good way I have found is to burn the project to a CD including all files using the same directory structure from your computer. This is tedious to setup, but it works. Hopefully someday someone will come up with an app to do this, like cakewalk's audio finder only for everything.

    Another newb Question

That's the gist of it. Firewire is used in many types of Audio and Video Hardware for that specific reason. USB 2.0 is great, but standard Firewire beats it.

    What Software do you recomend?

M-box with pro-tools is a great deal for around $500. If you are looking for a less expensive solution I would look into Mackie's Tracktion 2, N-Track, the Lite version of cubase, something like that. I don't know of any packages featuring those apps, but those are all available for about $100...

i want a new soundcard... some questions

You do not need to buy memory in the same size you already have. Buy a 512 unit or a 1 gig unit and you will be sitting pretty. As far as the Audiophile 2496 goes, it is great. I use one on my PC and it records perfectly. Be aware of a few things however. The 2496 will only allow 2 mono...

More RAM to ur comp = more processing power = more plugins???

Yes. RAM will definitely help. Effects plugins are generally RAM and CPU heavy, so more RAM is always a good thing. I sometimes use my iBook G4 for recording and after I added 1 gig of RAM (1.25 total) I was able to really load up on plugins.

How can I determine where my system's bottleneck is? (i.e. RAM or Processor Speed)

Ram. VST uses lots of RAM. VSTi uses RAM like it's going out of style. Increasing your buffers is not the best solution...get more RAM and hey if it doesn't help, more RAM is always good anyway.

    HT technology

Just like a dual processor, in order for hyperthreading to be beneficial, the software on your system has to take advantage of it. Otherwise they are fine processors and will work well.

    Linux recording?

Ardours development is set to add support for midi editing eventually, but that's awhile down the road. You can use loops in Ardour, but it is the old fashioned time stretcching method. You import the loop, time stretch it so that it is in time correctly (Just figure out how many beats in the...

What is the best laptop for recording?

I think the MacBook Pro will be making quite a splash in the future, but for now the only recording app compiled for the Intel Mac is Garageband, which is a great program but not the best. Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, none of these are availablle yet. I think I heard Logic Pro for Intel Macs is...

New Computer based system idea - help needed

I wouldn't dismiss Mackie's products so quickly. I had good experiences with pre's on various Mackie mixers, and I heard only good things about the 1210 so far. I wish I could have started with something like that. My first recording PC was an AMD K62 450 Mhz with 128 megs of RAM and a...

    Linux recording?

Arodur is great. I use the OS X version running under X11 and the Audio is truly pristine. The only problem you will run into is that Ardour does not have any midi playing or editing capabilities. the only midi functionality in it is for midi control surfaces. For midi editing most Linux...
