    Over compressing/the loudness war

You know glen...I can't actually disagree much with you at all. I can more easily understand where you're coming from from your last post...didn't agree with the closing statement at all, as it also contradicted what you were talking about. It's entirely subjective. Someone over here likes...

    Over compressing/the loudness war

Well...who is "controlling" popular music these days? THat will answer your question of the diminishing quality. It makes a lot more sense than, people are mixing too loud, so music is dead (I mean, come on that IS really over dramatic.

    ummm.....good modern music? =D

    Over compressing/the loudness war

makes perfect sense, and I absolutely agree...there's just a lot of people who are one extreme or the other, can't see exceptions to rules.

    "Dry" track vs. "Wet" track

a wet track is a song that gets you laid by a lot of women ;) A dry track means you're going to get anally reamed by Bubba as soon as you play it for anyone.

    Over compressing/the loudness war

Every single time someone argues against "square waveforms' they bring up the same thing... either... 70s or 80s music which would sound absolutely terrible smashed to hell, or really shitty modern music which would sound awful regardless of how it was mixed... Not every recording SHOULD be...

    Over compressing/the loudness war

Yeah see that's just what I'm saying. You get me. (I'm not as insane as I think, eh?) There are some projects I do that are very very visually dynamic...some that are one big square wave when zoomed all the way out (literally just as bad as every screen shot people post in jest on here)... If...

well the first bit of enlightenment that I can offer... you don't hear in mathematical equations...so why mix with them?

    Over compressing/the loudness war

took the words right out of my mouth... conventional wisdom/popular truth doesn't automatically become wise or full of truth.. in fact, from everything I've observed in my life, it's more often than not, the popular/conventional truths that are the most full of shit. Hitler himself said... the...

    Over compressing/the loudness war

no...it's that nobody gives a shit about being original or breaking boundaries...that's why music sucks these days. You could mix a shitty song ANY way and it will still be a piece of shit.

    Over compressing/the loudness war

I don't totally agree, actually. Yes, a lot of the time people get the square waveforms out of either inexperience or going for the wrong goal (loud vs. quality) but there's nothing to say that the visual presence of your waveform will have ANY bearing on what it sounds like. The thing is, I...

    Over compressing/the loudness war

that's fine :) There's just a lot of people in the audio industry who shit bricks over this kind of thing... I can appreciate if it's a bad mix or something, but if it sounds good, who gives a toss? It's like, a different version of the concept of "what's with these kids today".

    best way to promote shows

flyers do actually work... think about it this way... with pretty much any ad, you're not going to check further into it the first time you see it in most cases... the trick is... make sure your logo/image is consistant...one flyering session in itself might only get a few extra people to your...

    I need major recording advice

yup yup... just give it time. Nothing comes right away, certainly not something you have to train your ears to do well. There's people who are naturally gifted at things like this, but still it requires years of honing their skills and constant improvement over their entire lives.

    Over compressing/the loudness war

who cares what a waveform looks like. Nobody buys a record to rip and stare at the waveform. Over-compressing inappropriately music sure is a bad practice, but really, if the mix sounds good who gives a flying fuck if it looks like one giant square wave?

getting things to 'sit right' in the mix without fighting each other

hmm...am I insane or is that incorrect? Of course if you mic one single source with more than one mic there can be phase issues. different distances mean slightly different times, and those time delays can cause phase cancelation. But then again, you could always phase align it all, if it's the...

getting things to 'sit right' in the mix without fighting each other

not in all cases...MORE TRACKS MOREEEEE TRAAAAACKS! ARHAERHARHARHARHARHAR! yes..that is right on..the best way... the best way to mix anything is always in the arrangement...you can get things to sit fairly well without even all that much mixing if you have the right musical arrangement.
