Herein lies one of the great problems of the cold 57 phenomenom. Most people who use the rectum for warming the SM57 dont realise that the 57 wont perform at its optimum at anal temperature. Inside the orifice the temperature holds at about 96.4 degrees . This is simply too warm for the Sm57...

MXL604's as o/h and a audix d6 on the kick. I've tried xy o/h and also the two drumsticks distance off the snare and two drumsticks distance behind the shoulder tecnique (as covered in the popular thread in this forum) and the latter picks up the snare better as it is facing straight down.

Agreed on all accounts except one. The sm57 is indeed a 3 'phase' mic, but that in fact is just a bastardization of the english language. Originally the mic was known as a 3 'Fays' mic as it was used by Fay Dunaway, Fay Donahue and the recently deceased Fay Jackson.

I'm using 3 mics to record drums, stereo o/h, and a kick mic. It all sounds pretty good but just wondering what I can do to the snare to beef it up without upsetting the rest of the stuff in the o/h's. Dont have capacity to close mic the snare at the moment but hopefully that will change soon...
