Any ideas on how to get this, or a similiar guitar "tone"? I'm talking about the rhythm guitar in Learning To Fly by Tom Petty. It sounds very "thin". I tried some EQ, which I'm not really good at, and it just sounded bad. :(
Here's a real short sample (~400 KB)...
Software doesn't effect your sound quality.
44.1/16-bit on Cubase is the same as 44.1/16-bit on Audacity, or any other program.
Some software may have better plugins which will effect sound quality if you choose to use them, but as far as effecting the quality of your recorded tracks, they don't.
I'd say the musicians and the music (songs) themselves are the most important. Everything else is secondary.
I'm sure $2,000 A/D converters are helpful, but I'd rather spend $2,000 on a new guitar or something. Most people can't tell the difference between poor/decent A/D converters and pro...
The only other place that I can think of is GarageBand.

You can sign up and upload your songs for free. Entering them into the contest is either $20, or you have to review 20 other songs.
There's also no limit on MP3 bitrate or how many songs you can have on there.
Or you could save your pennies a bit longer and get a DMP3. Big quality difference to me, and only about $50 more.
Also, I'm pretty sure the DMP3 has full 48V phantom power.
I've hung a "down" blanket infront of my door before when my little sister came over, so me and a friend could record.
My little sister is real loud... screaming, laughing, etc. Actually my whole family is loud.
I couldn't hear any of it.
I would at least try this before buying expensive...
I completely disagree with it "sounding like total crap". Maybe you got one that was setup poorly or something.
I have one, and I know a few other people who have one and there's nothing wrong with the way it sounds. Only one pickup so there is not as much control over the tone but it's still...
I've played several Fender guitars made in Mexico that were good. Just had to change some parts like the tuning machines and it was fine. Just because it's made in mexico doesn't make it shitty. Just some parts are made from cheaper material, but those are parts I usually replace on a guitar anyway.
Um, if your internet is slow then your internet is slow.
Or it could just be MySpace being slow because there's somewhere around 900 billion people that use it.
For music I recommend www.SoundClick.com.
I would save. Think of it like this.
You buy a $100 mic. You're pretty satisfied with the results, but later you want to upgrade. So now say you decide to spend $200. The totals $300. And for $300 you can get a really decent mic.
But if you must decide on a $100 mic, I would go with a studio...
I'm pretty sure that's right.
A mono signal panned center will be 50% volume in left, and 50% in right.
A mono signal panned 60% left, will be at 60% volume in left, and 40% in right.
Some software, like Adobe Audition, have different options for panning/volume.
What do you mean they're gone?
Are the .dll files still in their folders?
Maybe n-track just isn't showing a list of all your plugins in which case you'll have to go into the preferences and add the VST/DX plugin folders.
I guess I should probably listen to the original. I haven't heard it in awhile, but I don't have any CDs here and I don't want to install any P2P crap on my computer especially since I just got a new hard drive.
I just started using Reason the other day. I still don't really know what I'm doing...
This is a backing track I made of Let It Be, for which I will later record a guitar part, and maybe some vocals.
I don't have a MIDI keyboard so I had to write down everything to a MIDI file then import it...
