General advice for people wishing to set up home project studio?

why do all that work? just stack rolls of r11 or r13 insulation ($100) into the corners to act as bass traps and polycylindrical diffusers. you can cover with cloth if you like) then buy some rigid insulation panels (say 6 @ $50) and some cloth (another $50 + $10 for fire retardent) and build...

A reasonably priced diffusor for home studios.

i think some of the claims made regarding "standing waves" and such seem dubious. it would be good if they had dispersion information on their products to disclose the frequency range they affect etc... i think the lack of technical information should be viewed as one possible difference between...

    Suggestions for improving tracking room?

if nothing else, you could put together some gobos to add isolation then. if you have a way to get them in and out of the basement easily, you can build some failr heavy ones, if not, you could go with a lighter construct to provide some separation. other than that, trying to put in some 703...

    Suggestions for improving tracking room?

well first and foremost, cleaning up the place would help... clearing out the 16x24 area and stacking things around the edge would help make the place feel more like a room... removing things that buzz and humm (besides the musicians... :-) will help. if you could pool together about a $1000...

    worlds smallest studio

I think you use 4" of 703 and put in some 1/2 or 3/4 plywood (wrapped in soft insulation) hangers to try to add some more trapping in that space. if you can spare a cloud over head - but 7' is pretty low already. you don't want to wind up with a dead room even if its small. plus I think the...

    worlds smallest studio

putting the absorbers on the ceiling-wall corner will help conserve floor space. also consider giving up a foot of space on one end to build some bass trapping - i.e. make the entire wall a good bass trapping setup. its only a foot but would help.

Alternating Placement of Bookshelves as Diffusors

having your "diffuser" bookcases farther away from the mix desk is better. generally you want a room to retain enough energy to sound good but not overly live where the bass modes, indirect reflections and echos make things mushy or indistinct. if you can get proper angles to the walls and just...

Alternating Placement of Bookshelves as Diffusors

thanks! from the photos it looked like you made a new type of diffuser and I was curious if somehow building them without wells did something more interesting or better... on second visit if i look at the top i see them... it was that straight on shot that made it look that way...

Alternating Placement of Bookshelves as Diffusors

I noticed Ethan Winer now has a new diffuser/absorber unit on his realtraps.com web site... Ethan - when looking at "typical" plans for a QRD diffuser, the well walls extend all the way to the front. in the pictures on your site, it doesn't look like the diffusers have well walls. how does your...

Alternating Placement of Bookshelves as Diffusors

wonder what happens if you stack the books in approximately the same ratios as a QRD diffuser? you could calculate the QRD 13 or 19 diffuser and arrange books by relative width and depth... then if anyone asks how you sort your library you can tell them "by quadratic residue sequence" :-)

    My frame (with sketchup file)

if you have the lumber to make the interior 2'x4' it would be easy. but if you have space limitations on the size of the entire absorber, you may need to trim it or if it is soft enough to "squeeze" it a bit to make it fit.

    My frame (with sketchup file)

i was thinking about weight in case you wanted to hang one overhead... with the 2x4 construction what you can do is add some 1/4" plywood triangles into each corner to square it up and then cover with cloth. with the 2x4 you can also use the hole-saw trick to lighten it... may even increase...

    My frame (with sketchup file)

conversely, you could build out the braces as slats to add some low end absorption and high frequency reflection but at the cost of more weight. you could probably reduce the weight a bit by using 1/4" plywood and routing slats into that in 1/8"-3/4" widths. one side would be absorptive, one...

    My frame (with sketchup file)

you can use 1x4 (3/4" x 3 1/2") for the framing - using 2 or 3 internal cross braces nailed/screwed and glued for the frame. insert the 4" insulation. cover with flame retardant fabric. add feet or hanging hooks as needed. you could use insulation strapping (a polyester type flat strap like what...

What kind of treatment? (MP3 Clip)

somewhat... read this: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2441 explans how to map it to your room and then you can see the areas that are likely to be problematic. bottom line is all rooms have standing waves resulting in cancellation (lower volume @ freq) and peaks (higher vol...

What kind of treatment? (MP3 Clip)

PM me for the sketchup file it's about 150K too big for the BBS. a Behringer ECM8000 is a decent omni mic that will work. when doing measurements you can either put the mic in the position where you will be mixing or playing, or you can put a speaker in those positions and measure around the...

What kind of treatment? (MP3 Clip)

you may need some traps to tail off some high end reflections and some bass traps in each vertical corner. check Ethan Winers site.

    Where do I put everything?

use the sub to support one of the other pa speakers so its at the right height to be a monitor for the vocalist. i'd put the drums all the way back and try to set up like a gig formation.

    Help with my studio/garage

the angled wall helps reduce or eliminate "flutter echos" - a reverb like series of small echos, and in the control room help to guide the sound waves to create a "reflection free zone" (RFZ). by adding some bass absorbers low in the front and all along the back wall, an overhead cloud, and...

    Help with my studio/garage

on the garage door you could replace it with a wall and add a french door to allow access for equipment and bike... I used to ride my bike (HD custom ST)into the basement at our cabin with a 3' door so a french door should be plenty. much more isolation and insulation... like so:
