What the hell is up with Steinberg?

The big dif bet SX and SL is the automation. With SX you can automate EVERYTHING. Every parameter on every plug. That means the 6dB boost at 13k and the threshold on your renComp and the delay Hz on your flange plug. This is pretty profound once you get used to that degree of control. The extra...

How to get that tight, "together" sound

...its about disciplined EQ. Its about making experienced decisions about where dif instruments are contributing to the mix, and at what frequencies. There are MANY posts about this on this board. Understanding what is muddying things up. Its about watching carefully whats going on between...

Name Your Top Picks For The Year

Cubase SX. CEP 2.0 Waves 3.5 which uses 1/10th the CPU of previous versions. UAD-1 plugs. Probably the RNP which I should be have by the end of next week.

mindprint en-voice or focusrite voicemaster pro ?

mindprint review # 47 Do a search on the envoice and voicemaster. Ive written a bunch of posts about it and I think its a great unit at any price. Ive had an envoice for a year or so and have had pricier pres here at various points. Its still one of the first units I reach for on vocals and...

The Listening Sessions - Session 2 is online

Thanks for posting, Dot. The beyer-->great river mp1 pretty much trounces all else (of the guitar tracks). Its got the most depth, and is tighter on bottom than any of the others by a decent margin. Right behind that would be phoenix followed by neve (with the 160). The beyer and the sm57 are...

    Are all plugins standardized?

Aside from the quality of plugs, one of the BIG distinguishing factors between n-track, CEP, samplitude on the one hand and sonar, cubase, logic and nuendo on the other (aside from MIDI) is automation. Parameters of effects (for instance, the ratio, threshold and gain on a compressor) can be...

Vocal mic in the $500 - $1,000.00 range

The TLM-103 is a great choice at any price but if youre looking for a mic on say...crack for instance, check out the dragonfly or the blueberry. Couple that with an RNP or Buzz MA2 and you have the fastest mic/pre in the west. Everything else will sound like its got foam on it.

    Top 5 CDs of 2002?

Audioslave wrote and tracked the record in 21 days and it sounds like it. Id take anything soundgarden did (or chris cornell's solo record) over the new stuff which sounds like they didnt spend enough time developing the songs. That said though, it still kills most of the shite now on rock...

    It's all in the mic . . .

Mic placement is much more or an of issue in a good sounding room where you have alot of options. In small rooms with low ceilings the placement options are more limited and the mic/pre/comp/gain staging possibilities become more important.

    ECM8000 for recording?

The ecm8000 is a great mic. Its more linear and less hyped than the 603s or oktavas. It would be more useful if it had did cardioid along with omni but as far as good organic sounding linear mic, its hard to beat under $500.

    MC012 vs MXL603s

The 603s are a bit brighter than the oktavas which can be an issue on drums in a small room with low ceilings and after using them for a few months now on overheads, they sound a bit scooped. The oktavas are a bit more linear. The rise on the 603s sounds like it starts at 6.5 or 7k so they dont...

Separate power amp vs. Active monitors

The active vs passive debate generally greatly exaggerates the advantages of active speakers and "active crossovers." Id say 90% of the active speakers out now have much coloration around the crossover points 2.5-3k. About as much as passive speakers. The coloration at the crossover points...

    Let's talk about Roland V-Drums...

Ive had similar problems getting roland drums to have the punch of real drums. It could be a roland thing bec other samples dont have the same issues. Roland sounds dont respond well to compression and electronic cymbals are basically worthless. Theres nothing in my whole library of samples like...

help me find the best mic pre for $2,000!

Really well put. The Buzz is all about transients. Everything going on is magnified to a surreal degree. But its not neutral...its incredible on rock vocals, OHs, acoustics. Nothing gets lost in the mix. Where the grace is neutral and linear from top to bottom the MA2 is aggressive and...

Need help w/Studio Projects B series CD

Maybe I characterized it wrong...the B series is not especially sibilant but the esses are not smooth at all. The 8-12k range sounds strange, uneven and not really transparent. If youre trying to tame the harshness of the cymbals I would experiment with mic positions first before I changed the...

Need help w/Studio Projects B series CD

Save your money and stick with the C-series. What their CD demonstrates very well are how lousy the B series is on vocals. The sibilance on every track was really not smooth...harsh and chunky come to mind.

help me find the best mic pre for $2,000!

Take a listen to Buzz. Two channels of MA2 around $1700. Focused and aggressive midrange thats reminiscent of BLUE mics only more subtle. Wide open top end. Tight low mid/bottom. I dont know what to compare it to. Its colored yet neutral, warm but accurate, etc.

How Long Do You Spend On Your Mixes ?

I stop there too and then offer them more time and mixing for a better product. Generally, as time goes on, the better the tracking the quicker the mixing.

How Long Do You Spend On Your Mixes ?

Wow. Alot of quick mixing. Doesnt anybody go back to retrack a vocal? A guitar part? Drums? Perhaps double sometyhing with a dif mic? Am I the only one that has spent several weeks to a couple of months mixing a song? Usually the more tracks in a song the longer it takes. Songs with 50+ tracks...

Best way to record a track

Absolutely. I think committing to anything before you have a basic picture fleshed out is going to negatively impact the song. Unless the band has heavily rehearsed every nuance I find that a sgnificant amount of writing and fleshing out of ideas happens in the studio where the band can hear...
