Ive never been a fan of preamp tests where there is 1 track in question and the idea is to decide which sounds better. Its how they stack up and contribute to the overall sound, how they fit with other tracks, etc that is the issue.
In any case, not having experience with the RNP I think I and...
Actually yeah...a bit in the hihats and my small 12" (for some reason the 10" is never a problem although it shares similar frequencies) but its pretty dependant on placement and what hihats/cymbals youre using. I would look there before I looked at the mic/pre combo. Im using zildjian A custom...
Mostly 603s or mc012s like everyone else. Why screw with what works, eh? ;) When I can get a second one,,, occasionally NT2s (which when placed right, with enough dampening on the walls are really really nice), 4033s, AT3525s (with a room mic). Nothing too crazy.
Hows that dragonfly treating you?
Geekgurl, I have the DIport and use it all the time. Im expecting the RNP to be more of the same with a smoother midrange and maybe a bit more bottom. The DIport is a pretty fast pre and I expect the RNP to be faster along the lines of one of my fav pres ..the buzz MA2..so Im told. We shall see...
The DIport kills everything in its range and is a major player as far pres go although its basically an underground unit. I can tell you when I first got mine last spring I was using soundcraft M8 pres on drums and overheads, while not horrible, the first time I used the mindprint on overheads...
Re: Monitors
Stop looking at hyped top end and upper mid as what determines a good monitor. That will lead to many problems in your mix. The idea of tannoy is detail without hype, you get a wide and even stereo image and they tend to translate better than most other monitors in the range...
Middleman,,,,, say no to drugs. :)
I listened again this morning and 2 is much more focused, less hyped, smoother, more linear, punchier has tighter transients. I havent messed with the RNP yet...Im still waiting for mine but I know the DMP3 and 1 sounds like the DMP3. Its got the that...
Im TOTALLY with you on the layering/stacking tracks ability of a pre. I think its a huge point thats missed by alot of people. If you are going to have a dense, textured mix then you dont want to be layering tracks (especially if youre doubling alot of tracks) with a pre with alot of bottom or...
Even with a 2" dif in placement you wouldnt get the phased smeared quality if the preamp didnt do that in general. The DMP3 track sounded middy and brighter (in an uneven way) I guess the 2" dif in placement is partly why.
Actually Im wrong. You can do it in SL too but you can only draw the lines. You cant do the other types of automation.
On any audio track click on the + sign in the lower left hand corner. You can add as many automated tracks as you want. Click in the volume box and go down to where it says...
Absenteeism at the oktava quality control department got so high, they opted to close the department altogeather.
They figured the steeuupid americans wouldnt know the dif anyway.
:) :)
Anybody who is not hearing very big and actually nicely illustrated differences (good job Participant) between these two preamps should probably get new monitors. I only listened to 2 bars of the arpeggiation on each track and already heard a huge difference in articulation and tonality right...
Ive had a similar experience with my drums (when theyre tuned right) in the tracking room when recording acoustic. The cool thing is that they only respond to particular frequencies...generally the toms and especially the floor tom which is all low mid range.
