    Of skycrapers and software

Hi GZ, Intriguing post. I don't think that there's any doubt whatever that the software you use could have an influence on how you create. But I also believe that it's just another influence or variable to add to the pile. I don't currently use any Jamstudio/Fruityloops/Band in a Box style...

My First Song - Perfectionist Beginner Blues (MP3)

Thanks for the comments Frankie. :) Maybe I will do it again sometime this year, even if it's only to improve the vocals. I've alway had a soft spot or that recording though - a bit like the way you tend to feel about your first girl-friend or first car. Light humour might not be what most...

My First Song - Perfectionist Beginner Blues (MP3)

Thanks for the comments guys. :) I mostly seem to go for light humour, but I do sometimes try and mix in something fractionally more 'philosophical'. Here’s a sample from one written a few weeks ago. It was a response to all those "I hate Christmas" posts. The idea was to contrast the more...

Great stuff Joseph. I especially liked the opening verse, which set the whole thing up with some great phrases and imagery. Like GZ was rather puzzled by "cut to the bone" which is usually used to mean something along the lines of 'deeply wounded'. But I came to the same conclusion as he did...

    February's challenge ~ GZ makes a start

OOps... Apologies for commenting too early. Comments removed. I hadn't picked up that there were rules about waiting until the end of the month, but I just spotted a reference in one of Joseph's posts, so rechecked the challenge. I belong to another songwriting forum where the exact opposite...

My First Song - Perfectionist Beginner Blues (MP3)

Nah, that's your job mate... but wrangling words around is a fascinating thing for sure. Thanks for taking the time to read and reply (I've been following the development of your current lyrics, so will try and add some comments later). Thanks very much for your kind words Up-fiddler -...

I can see where a acoustic guitar is a powerful tool...

Beautifully put. :) Finding "the joy in the effort" was the biggest leap for me. The early weeks/months seemed to have a mixture of pleasure and pain/frustration, with more of the pain than the pleasure. But as I developed I found that I could go back to the first chapters the beginner books...

My First Song - Perfectionist Beginner Blues (MP3)

Here's one in a similar vein. It's about a man looking back at his cock-sure youth and... well, it should be able to speak for itself really. Designed to be sung in a pub with an Irish accent. It's sung to an arrangement (which sounds better than 'direct rip-off') of the old traditional tune...

My First Song - Perfectionist Beginner Blues (MP3)

Thanks very much for listening and commenting GZ. :) I'm chuffed that you enjoyed the lyrics, and were appreciative of the work that went into them. I try and write lyrics that sound reasonably unforced. If I get it right, I'd like it to seem as if the fact that they rhyme is almost just a...

My First Song - Perfectionist Beginner Blues (MP3)

Hi all, I’ve been yakking away here for a few days now, without once providing any evidence that I know one end of of an instrument from another, or have ever actually written a song. So I thought it might be time to give you an opportunity to have a laugh at my expense. Clicking on the link...

    Segovia, anyone? *opinions needed*

Thanks for another terrific post SEDstar. :) So many points to think about that I'm currently running it off on the printer so that I can take it away from the screen for further pondering... Cheers, Chris

    Leading Me On

Hi, Wow, that was great. I'm particularly jealous of the singing voice. I may try and steal it while you sleep.... ;) Like GZ, by about half way through I did start notice the lack of variation though. By the end my attention was even beginning to wander a bit... :o However, it sounds like...

I can see where a acoustic guitar is a powerful tool...

Thanks for taking the time to post all that SEDstar. Heaps of intersting info, but I especially liked this: Getting that last bit of 'reality' is so tantalising.... As a non-drummer I can be satisfied with some embarrassingly cheesy backing drum tracks, but I'm slowly trying to get...

I can see where a acoustic guitar is a powerful tool...

Great post. I have an 'arranger keyboard' with a range of built in sounds. Some of them sound pretty good, and others are obviously cheesy. But there seems to be a rule of thumb which says that, even among the better sounds, the ones that sound the best to me are always ones for instruments...

    Segovia, anyone? *opinions needed*

Nice one. :) Very juicy sound (I also just got the frooty one, and liked that too). Can you share any more details about the composition and how you're doing it all please? Cheers, Chris

I can see where a acoustic guitar is a powerful tool...

Nice story about your mate not spotting the same tune. :) When you talk about using this or that sound, what are you using to control them? Are you doing it through some sort of midi controller, or just using software and writing the lines out? I'm trying to get some experience with as many...

    theory question

:D Ah there's the difference. My generation thinks a few pages is SHORT. Not even a light warm up. Practically invisible..... I regularly read entire books  You should see my house - over 2,000 books. Scary. Not only that but we've read them all - some more than once.... How weird is...

    Birthday Gift-What to buy?

:D I like it... For what it's worth I bought a Zoom H4 handheld recorder precisely because it also works as an audio interface. So I get the best of both worlds - it can do do quick and simple stereo recording with its own mics, internal 4 track recording using whatever you want to plug in (2...

    Help with new studio setup....<<noob>>

You don't necessarily need both. Is that where the confusion is? Option 1: I have a fairly basic mixer that records to itself. It has some nice sliders to push up and down and various knobs to twiddle. I can record, balance, add effects, mix, etc on that alone. No computer required. Some even...

    theory question

Thanks for posting that Joseph. :) Now I can see what you're doing. The program that you're using (Jamstudio was it?) lets you put some chords in and then plays back its own arrangement for you (much like Band in a Box, etc). It shows you the common chords found in a key, and then gives you a...
