    The "Spirit of 47" project

The V67 I own has a pretty flimsy grill. Don't particularly like the design of it either, but plenty of people like the mic.

    The "Spirit of 47" project

Phil, did you go with a 1 layer on the 460? I've never dealt with the 2001, but it's shape is sort of 67/87ish. Is the mesh type the problem? Craig

    The "Spirit of 47" project

Actually, I'm more concerned about the mount, becuase I've got an M7 style capsule built by a member at the Prodigy Pro forum. The mount you used looked sturdy. Craig

    The "Spirit of 47" project

Phil, I might have asked this before, but where did you get the M7 and the mount? Craig

Transformer Balanced or Electronically Balanced Preamp?

Not really. They're not like tubes in that regard. Unless of course there's really not one in there!

Transformer Balanced or Electronically Balanced Preamp?

Transformer balanced pres such as those made by John Hardy can be as transparent (possibly more) than electronically balanced gear. Sure, API and Neve type transformers add coloration, usually in a way that many find pleasant. But I used crummy electronically balanced stuff for years, and I'm...

    Avant mics any good?

Oops, the stereo mic is an FET design-ignore my previous post.

    Avant mics any good?

I'm guessing the guts are closer to an Apex 460.

    Tube Valve mic pre's

No. There's no such thing as a standard warm valve sound. Well designed valve circuits are often more clear and hi-fi than their solid state counterparts. One or two of the more expensive ART boxes run their tubes at the proper voltages and the tubes actually amplify something (in the Tube MP...

Modding a CAD GXL3000 Microphone (help needed) w/pix

That I can't tell. They're not exactly the same I'm sure, but they're definitely in the same family. Couldn't find an online schematic, so the best thing for us to give advice would be for you to give a shot at a hand drawn one. Shouldn't be too difficult I don't think. At least the first...

Modding a CAD GXL3000 Microphone (help needed) w/pix

OK, I stand corrected. This looks like a derivative of the U87Ai circuit, so I opened mine up, and yes there are ceramic capacitors in the DC to Dc converter portion of the circuit. No tantalum caps, though. Another difference is the U97 uses polystyrene caps at critical parts of the circuit...

Modding a CAD GXL3000 Microphone (help needed) w/pix

If you're going for the Neumann sound, then probably leave the screens in. I only removed them in the mic that I was going for a C12 flavor with.

Modding a CAD GXL3000 Microphone (help needed) w/pix

There are two ceramic caps that could probably go too. One is C11, the other I can't tell. Craig

    Mic modding party....

While I've read Micheal Jolly prefers the cathode follower on the Oktava tube mics, many are quite pleased removing the cathode followers on their Apex 460's, Nady 1050's, and other similar builds, as this gets the circuit closer to the AKG/Elam circuit. It hink wanting a cathode follower...

    Rode NT2-A vs. Audio-Technica AT4047/SV

I've got the 4047. Really solid on a lot of applications. I always have mine somewhere on the drum kit. Craig

    Apex 435 mods, anyone?

Before and after (or modded vs unmodded) clips would be awesome. Craig

Absolute favorite mic for snare drum

I've tried several, and the Studio Electronics SE3 does the best job of capturing the whole drum for me. If I shoot it across the head, I get the pop of the head, the sound of the shell, and the ringing snares. I'm not tempted to do more than one mic on it.

    Removing inner mesh grille?

Neumann U47's, 67's and 87's have an inner mesh. I certainly wouldn't tinker with those! There are certain cheaper mics that have headbasket issues that this might be beneficial with, but this varies from mic to mic.
