I made up my snake today. After playing around with a few different ways of wiring, it seemed that there was only one way that worked. At the TRS end, I wired the tip to the ring. Then the tip and sleeve from the TRS end to the tip and sleeve on the TS end. Works perfectly. :D

The midi device that you are seeing is definately not your mic. It would be a midi input. Have you tried reading the manual(s) and quick start guide(s)?

In Aus, you can't get much for that price. I'd go for a second hand Mapex Venus, like the one you listed. They're pretty well constructed for the price and won't collapse on you.

I use a small bass drum muffling pillow. It's made by Protection Racket. It works really well. It's a bit like the Evans one mentioned. It bounces off the head when you hit it, and falls back onto the head shortly after to dampen the sound.
