    AT4050 vs MSH-1's

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but aren't the MSH-1's omni mics, making them unsuitable for a coincident/near coincident pair mic setup?

Drummer's Solo Album - Please Help!

Thanks guys! (Especially hipskind) It turns out that I will take longer to get my gear sorted than expected. I'm now seriously considering holding out until I can get my hands on a pile of high quality pres, such as the JLM TMP8, more leads, mic stands, maybe some Naiant omni mics for the room...

    Drum mic bundles?

I second the notion of the Audix DP-5A set. The Audix D6, D4, D2 and i5 mics are top notch. I ended up getting the Audix DP7a mc pack - the same as above, but with two ADX51 condensors, which i sometimes use on hats/snare bottom/ride. They're very usable.

    i hate your kikc sound.

Hell... How about a gated and heavily reverbed elephant trumpet? :D

Drummer's Solo Album - Please Help!

Here's my situation... I've decided (probably stupidly) to embark on a solo project, featuring mainly drums. I want to get the best possible results, and have a list of gear to get my hands on in the near future, and a few things that I've ordered that haven't arrived yet... My concern is...

Does anyone have experience with the Audix ADX51?

I've just ordered a drum mic pack with a pair of ADX51s, and am wondering what experiences people have had with them, as overheads, percussion mics or on acoustic guitar. I searched, and couldn't find any reviews or detailed comments anywhere. Are they really THAT bad that no-one uses them?

Looking for basic soundcard - please help!

Thanks guys, my brother's using an amp with RCA inputs, so that's somewhat of a bonus. The only issue is Vista 32bit compatibility. Can anyone confirm whether the 2496 will work with Vista?

    Overhead Mics / Snare Mic

I concur with the suggestion of using RODE NT5s. They're good sounding, durable mics, with very low self noise. The only mic in that range that I'd recommend over a 57 for snare is the Audix i5. I'd advise that you put the extra money into some NT5s, and use one of your current 57s on the snare.

Looking for basic soundcard - please help!

Not a recording question. A brother of mine has recently built himself a new PC, and the onboard soundcard is noisy, and generally pretty bad quality. He'd like to get a PCI soundcard, with a quality stereo output. No 5.1 or 7.1 doo-dads. Line ins and Mic ins don't matter. Also has to be...

How was THIS helpful? What are you recording? Vocals? Guitar? How do things sound to you in the room?

    New bass drum purchase dilemma.

I forgot to add my disclaimer... You can always make a drum less resonant, by muffling and head selection, but you can't add resonance to a drum.

    New bass drum purchase dilemma.

Does it have to be a Pearl bass drum? If you're going purely by sound, I suggest looking at a Mapex Saturn bass drum. They have two inner plies of walnut and 4 plies of maple. Saturns are some of the smoothest, lowest pitched(in comparison to other drums of the same size) most resonant drums...

why do software instruments suck live?

It could be simply because you're playing it so much louder, competing with a band and all. What's actually wrong with the sound through the PA? What sounds worse about it?

    In-line volume control?

It may seem silly, but the simplest thing might be a dvd player with a volume control. Then he could just use the remote to control volume.

So... Are they there yet?! :p

    Mapex???

And with good reason! I own a Mapex Saturn, and the construction and finish are flawless. It sounds great too. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to record with them. I use Tama hardware with it since; a) It's cheaper b) It's lighter c) It's still more than heavy enough d) It's pretty much...

    Mapex???

Mapex make excellent drums. Their hardware is questionable though. Look into their Pro-M or Saturn series drums. They're very reasonably priced and not lacking in quality.

    Help with headphone amplifier

What sort of headphone amp? Most have a switch, or the left input is labeled (mono), and will go to both left and right if you don't plug anything into the right input. Otherwise, it's a simple solder job.
