    Sometime Soon - new tune

I like the guitar sounds. It washes over real nice. There are some times when the vocals may not be getting enough space from the guitar. I wonder if this could be a candidate for side chain compression. That way when the guitar is in full bloom it's good, and when the vocals are going the...

Splash of Sunny Weather with Nick and Dave

Latest mix is nice IMO. I think the vocals sit real nicely. You dialed them back some. I would have thought they would be competing for space but somehow they are not on my system. Every word is clear. Drums are nice and punchy. Works well for this tune. I do hear how the right side guitars...

    bass traps

Super chunks reach farther into the lower frequencies. If that is an option, I think that is preferable. They take up space though and it looks like you don't have much of it. Looks like you really only have 1 corner that could fit one. I've heard of guys making super chunks that were smaller...

Splash of Sunny Weather with Nick and Dave

Sounds good Ray. Vocals sound great IMO. Nice and clear and the doubles on the accents are a nice touch. Late in the song there are some backup vocal "ahhhhs" I think it's your voice. Not sure they are adding anything. The drums themselves sound fine. Bass drum and snare and toms are fine...

    Teaching Question

There are a lot of classical guitar technique books that do deep dives into the very small movements that most of us never even think about. You could start with some of those books - Aaron Shearer's is the most popular although Andre Segovia famously said it was garbage lol.

    March

Love the bass drum and snare sound on this. This thing struts with a big butt. There is wash or graininess on the crash cymbals. Not sure if it's phase or mp3 conversion or if you've got compression hitting them weird. Multiple things can cause that.

My first finished song and mix in YEARS!

Hey what's up tube dude. Sounds cool. Good performances. I like the vocals but they do seem a little more in back of the mix at times. When he's wailing it's about right. Maybe there is some comping to do there. Drums sound a little bit back as well IMO. Maybe it's just the gits crowding...

    Walkin' Around

Fun song. I like the way the instruments come in. Nice tight unison downbeats - the mix balance there is really good IMO. Like the guitar tones and the reverb on the guitar solo. Drums aren't quantized? Some of the fills sound kinda like something someone would program but not natural. Like...

I tried this and the results were pretty good. Thanks for the tip!

    Sennheiser e906

I've got an e609. Those bastards at Sennheiser need to come up with a less confusing naming convention. Anyway, I've used the 609 a bunch for live recordings. I've had some decent results. And I like not having to use a mic stand.

Microphonus Obscurus - the one mic to rule them all...

I have no idea what that is. Have you recorded anything with it? If yes, how does it sound?

Crop Circles with Nick and Dave

You need not pull any punches with me! And I agree, this is not the best snare drum sound. This is something I've struggled with. Snares are my bane. And I've got 4 to choose from so there's no excuse lol. Just when I get the snare sound I like, it turns out one of the toms will set it off...

Crop Circles with Nick and Dave

Huge improvement IMO. Major upgrade on the phase stuff.

Album Tunes, First Tracks, Need Help...

Eh this isn't going to be helpful: I like the first mix for the big loud sections. I like the second mix better on the intro and lower sections. On the first mix, something is resonating beautifully in those loud sections - which is the strength of the song IMO. On the second mix, the rhythm...

Album Tunes, First Tracks, Need Help...

First of all let me just say that your tunes sound friggin awesome and all of my comments are couched within that context. Track 1: I am trying very hard to nitpick and coming up empty. Sounds great man. Black mirrors (I accidentally listened to the first mix): A little string buzz in the...

    Green Maverick

Overall I really like the dry feel of it. Very clean. Uncluttered. Vocals seem a little low in the mix. In the initial section the left guitar seems to outweigh anything on on in the right side. Maybe pan the vocals or backup vocals to the right side to balance things out? Doesn't seem like...

Crop Circles with Nick and Dave

I a/b'd this with a mix we had from almost a year ago. The guitars seemed better balanced back then. Drums sound better this time though. Snare might be a tad too loud in this latest mix. There was a lot of hat and cymbal wash on the old one. Much better on the new one. I think I had a phase...

    Amp Recommendations

If you really want the surf tones without blowing a lot of money and maintenance on a vintage amp, get a '65 deluxe reverb. That's what Los Straitjackets uses. In their rig rundown on youtube it was kinda cool because they are well-known and could easily afford to get old brownfaces if they...
