    Drum Overheads

Short answer is yes. I don't think you need to have your overheads all that high though if you are worried about reflections from the ceiling. My L OH is about 44 inches above my snare.

    Best way to record drums

Yeah +1 to that. Trial and error. Experiment. Become a mad scientist. Try new things. Try tuning drums in new ways, especially your snare drum. Try the 1 loose lug method. Try different heads and different mics, etc.

    Boy Band

Ah I didn't remember if I recorded a hat track on that one. You can mix those really low if you want, it will still add some crispness even if it is 17 DBs below the overheads.

    Boy Band

Gonna be tough to bring the hats down. I suck at separating hat from snare in the overheads and snare track. There is only so much he can do with what I gave him. After this recording I got some new hats that are not as loud. I am also working on just hitting the hats easier than the drums. I...

    Love and War

It sounds pretty good to me. There are certainly no glaring errors here that are jumping out at me. I am listening on decent monitors in a treated room. I guess for the first verse there is a guitar on the right side, it kind of has a higher harmony. That guitar could use a little more guts...

    Boy Band

Nice mix! I like all the changes in the vocal harmonies and guitar lines you made since I tracked it. Drums sound good to me. Especially the toms, I'm thinking you did some nice EQ'ing there. Bass and bass drum are linking up nice. If you make any changes to this mix I am thinking they should...

What's Your Preference, Spruce or Cedar Topped Acoustic?

For classical guitarists, it's pretty well established that Cedar tends to record better - rounder fuller tones. Think John Williams playing a Greg Smallman guitar. Spruce can sometimes project better but recordings tend to sound a bit thinner. I am not sure why the discrepancy is so clear...

    Thoughts on the Eleven Rack?

I went to see Book of Mormon a few Months ago. During intermission I peaked into the Orchestra pit. That is what the guitarist had. He sounded pretty good. The drummer was playing in a non-permanent enclosed octagon room.

    Live recording ZZ Top Cover

Gits, drums, vocals - each of the elements sound decent but they aren't going together. Vocals seem like they could use some different EQ. They are extremely boomy to my ear. Gits have tons of verb and drums don't seem to have much. It puts the gits way back on the stage - so far back that...

    Country Rock track

Nice use of accidentals. Fun tune. If this is already mastered, why is it in the MP3 clinic?

Headphones for drummers and R/L channel usage

Drumber here. I have HD 280s. I am late to the party but, HD 280s are fine for isolation. They will protect well. I am sensitive to the loud drum noises and with the HD280s it is a non-factor. I do NOT think they have weak bass response. IMO they lack clarity in general but this isn't so...

Trying to get more high end mojo on this...

I think that's precisely it. You can't boost what isn't there and these guitars don't have upper mid range pop. To my ear there is a perfect space/void in this song for a more aggressive guitar sound and it's just not being met with the current tone. Recommend the OP spend some time in the...

    Lack of Light

Love the backup vocal harmonies on this. They sit nice. I think it could use a little more low end- you really took something away there. Why not try removing it from all your tracks except bass git and bass drum?

    New Underground rap track

yeah it sounds like your vocal track is completely fried or something. Read up on "gain staging."

Mix Feedback wanted - Classical Piano with Strings & Trombone

Hey there, classical musician here. The piano sounds great IMO. The violins sound as if they were mic'd farther away so they sound thinner and more in back of the mix. Not sure if there is some phase cancellation going on there. What was your mic method? Would be helpful to know. Same goes...

The Guitar Tone and Mix Thread

Sounds great. Nice tones. Of these samples I liked the 335 with the velocette and 57/ribbon mic and the 335 with the vox/closed cab with the 57 the most. There was something kind of boxy sounding about the hughes and kettner sound. The Mrk V sound was ok, just not as good as the velocette...

Recording drums and rhythm guitar as initial multitracks

That's how I do it. In this scenario the biggest hurdle for me is to ensure the energy is just as good as it would be in a live setting. Sometimes it can come off a bit flat.

    What sucks?

The bass line isn't tight. Need crisper rhythms there. That would go a long way.
