    Buckethead Cover

Parts of this theme appear to be borrowed from the adagio movement of Joaquin Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez. This is the most popular classical guitar concerto of all time: John Williams - Concierto De Aranjuez (2nd Movement) - YouTube

New take on folk song "Annable Lee"

Sounds great dude. Very cool tune and arrangement. On my monitors there is a bit of a build-up in the bass and lower mids at times. A bit boomy - as spantini mentioned. When it's just voice and guitar the blend is perfect.

Surf Rock Song - All Comments Welcome

Here's a new mix of this tune. I tried to make the drums and bass a little more forward. I did this by reducing the scoops on the EQs (which were significant) and turning up the levels. I also significantly reduced high and low pass filters on those tracks. I also increased the volume of the...

Surf Rock Song - All Comments Welcome

I have two great preamps (millennia - which I bought for classical guitar recording because they have exceptionally low noise) and great mics (Neumann KM-184 spaced pair) and an okay room. I think that helps. I use the millennia / KM-184 combo on drums overheads and guitars. Everything else is...

Surf Rock Song - All Comments Welcome

Thanks! Yeah there's actually a lot going into that pause. I've got real room reverberation on the drums and guitar, reverb tank reverb also on the guitars, and plug-in reverberation on everything. I'm also auto fading out amp noise. Maybe that's all an unhappy blend.

Surf Rock Song - All Comments Welcome

Thanks for listening. I learned about this miking technique from Eric Valentine on youtube. Except he hooks up 3 different amps and has a reverberation room (haha). But the spacing is roughly the same. I have an okay room - 16 x 32 with 9 foot ceilings and it's well-treated. I probably have 4...

Surf Rock Song - All Comments Welcome

Hey there. I'm playing drums and bass and guitar on here. This is the first mix I've ever done using outboard compression in the mix phase. I enjoyed it and learned a lot. I know you don't really need anything that's not ITB these days but for me this was a great learning experience. Recommend...

Project X: Feedback on early mixes

There are probably big gain staging issues with this mix. Maybe read up a bit on gain staging. I suspect the vocals were tracked too hot. The intro sounds great but when the vocals kick in that balance is lost. Gotta try to make the tune carry that initial balance.

    Happy 4 U

Sounds good man. Overall lots of pleasant well-recorded sounds on here. You've got the acoustic guitar and the piano panned 100%. I am wondering if the song would sound more together if you allowed them to be a bit less panned. But it seems you are using this wideness to set things up later...

Spooky Heavy with Bass using the same patch as Guitar experiment collab

Agree with VHS. The drums are kinda too small for the tune. Later on in the tune it improves during the section. I still feel like the bass drum could have more thump (60-80Hz) and the snare could use m MUCH more fatness (240Hz.) and crack (2.5kHz). At the very end I can hear drums in the...

    laid-back rock thing

Yeah, needs bass to match the big guitars. The drums seem kinda tame. Need to liven them up somehow. Maybe increase the crack sound for snare drum. I dunno. Just an idea.

I need some BRUTAL opinions on this new mix

I think the reverb on the snare takes it to the back of the mix a little more than you want in a tune like this. Taming that reverb may focus it a bit more and put it more up front.

lol I didn't even know this was a cover until I read this thread. I thought you wrote this tune. :laughings:

    Used Hi-Hats for Poor People

The thing about budget cymbals is, they're not actually good for your budget. You buy them, then you realize they suck, then you inevitably buy something better even though your budget cymbals are still in great condition. Because you have to. If you are a long term musician, they're just an...

Snare drums, differences, how many do you really need? etc

I have 2 snares that I use regularly. Own 6. Ludwig supraphonic and this old Sonor wooden snare. I use the Ludwig for surf rock or rock in general. The Sonor snare I use for slow tunes when I want a deep 1980s power ballad or thud snare sound. A snare drum can alter the entire way your...

    Used Hi-Hats for Poor People

Yes. They are. Definitely don't go with any brand's budget cymbal. They are all terrible IMO. Another important thing is condition. If they have the slightest shred of a crack, send them back immediately. It will only grow.

    Noise

Nice helicopter stereo effects at the end there. That's a pretty cool way to end it.

Pen Penny Pen with JohnnyAmato and ibleedburgundy

Sounds good. I think something is happening to the toms at the very end. Like they got muted or something.

My friend wants to learn drums

Put on headphones. Play along with songs. That's how I learned. I got to be an ok drummer that way. She will almost certainly never become a great drummer that way. Now I am going back and learning rudiments. But I think it's harder now because I am breaking old habits.

Bored in San Antone with JohnnyAmato and ibleedburgundy

I couldn't agree more. There are some killer instrumental interludes in Ray's songs. They are so good, making them more of a focus is something to consider. My fav is the one in "I'll Tell You Something."
