    Recording guitars with sm58?

There's a bunch of advice from people who are probably far wiser than I am (and more experienced). But, and someone usually points this out for these types of threads, make sure that the source sounds good. The difference in sound between a 58 and a 57 isn't exactly worlds apart. If you are...

    Acoustic Guitar Hell

It's really hard to hear the finer points of a recording through mp3 (understatement of a lifetime!), but I think that I could hear that strange noise that you were talking about..? Does it show up more when you hit the B string? Seems like there's an odd rattle somehow, maybe just in that...

    Going from Acoustic to Electric

I second this. I like the Pacifica better than Fender Strat's - Strat's are fussy, my Pacifica is ready to play every time I pick it up (and is in tune!). Fender strats are fantastic after you get into the $750 - $1,000 range. I've never felt a need to upgrade from the Pacifica to a Strat.

What's the last mic you had in your hands?

    AKG C1000 I know, I know....I like it anyway!

    Is 15W enough?

Wow - lots of responses. Everyone is talking about metal music here - this person is playing Bright Eyes / Deathcab style music primarily - much more mellow than metal. I got one of those older Roland amps that were 8 x 6 inch speakers. I can't remember how many watts, I think 25. It was...

The Deal with Academic Version software

I agree that this will depend on the company. Many companies do sell the full product at a cheap price to students - the thinking is that (1) students don't have any money, so a bunch of students buying it cheap is better than nothing, and (2) people use and buy what they know - after...

Should I sell my Groove Tubes 'The Brick' preamp

Yes, I think that this underlying point comes up a lot. Within a few years, I have gone from crappy berry board pre's, to a Blue Tube, to a DMP3, to a Tampa - looking for the "magic" dollar point where I can get a "magic" sound. I'm glad that I have two Tampa's now, but the difference between...

I'm constantly amazed at how bad GC service is...

I worked as a buyer for a digital video distributor for a while - and although I'm not going to defend GC (and I really hate Musician's Friend....), I do understand how a special order can get screwed up. People that make gear are often really crappy about getting orders done, or even calling...

    Should I trade my NT1 for 2 MXL 603?

Let me answer your question with a question. Are you unhappy with the sounds you are getting right now? I've gone through this too...trading budget mics for other budget mics, or trading budget pre's for other budget pre's. It's something that a lot of us find fun around here. But it's...

    Question

There are a few of these now: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Blue-Snowball-USB-Microphone?sku=279015 And I also have no idea how they sound. Probably not very good. Martsayin, since you may not have software either, my advice is to get something that is all in one with software and a...

Newbie seeking help with '57 Twin and E609...

Oh, and my Porta doesn't have XLR inputs, so I use this type of adapter: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/American-Recorder-Technologies-XLR-Female-to-14-Male-Mono-Adapter?sku=339523 with a standard mic cable. Works fine. Only thing that I'm lacking is phantom power for condenser mics.

Newbie seeking help with '57 Twin and E609...

This is a wierd problem, and I suspect something simple is going on. I actually just bought one of these: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Tascam-414mkII-Portastudio?sku=240781 to do simple demos, and the sound is fairly good. Crunchy midrange heavy analog type sound. The other day I...

How do you get guitar feedback when an amp is out of the question?

At one point, I thought it would be neat to make loops that were ebow guitar sounds. And I put some effort into making them sustain at infinite length. Don't know if this is useful, but you're welcome to give this a try (you can either open this up on ACID or Fruity Loops, or just copy and...

    Would Reverse Psychology work?

I think to really get the most mileage out of this, you should have the protest a few days or a week before the show. See if you can get on the news and in the papers, then they would be advertising the event for you. That would be totally punk rock. Or maybe the venue would cancel the...

valve [experiment] (new style for me)

I like the thin guitar in the beginning - I'd say to make the transition even more dramatic. The drums and bass could really pound you when they come in. And the drums sound like someone bashing away at a kit. I also like the driving bass/drum support to the song. I think that this sort of...

Duncan Sheik gives tracks away for re-mixing with his new record

I have this album and have tinkered with it for a while. The tracks are all .wav files, so yeah, you can use whatever software you like. The tracks seem to be post mixed, pre mastered (like they mixed the album, then muted all tracks but one and dumped those files). So drums are summed to a...

    Im a sucker for M-Audio

Maybe there's a better fit for you, and maybe there isn't. I don't really know - I haven't owned that many pre's. I think that a lot of us obsess about these types of things, I know I do. Before this drives you crazy, maybe you should read the thread in this section called something like...

    Acid question

I'm not so sure that ACID is designed to edit the source files, but I'm not sure. There is no limit the number of tracks that you can have in ACID, so if I were you, I would leave the alternate vocal as a separate track, then do a fade and and fade out between the two tracks. So fade out on...
