    analog tape deck to cd...

as far as i know you will have to use a computer program. I use Audacity- it's a simple multi-track program and wave editor and it's free. just plug in from the tape deck's RCA to your computer and record each track onto audacity. Save them as wavs, then burn em.

    RMGI SM911 shedding

I just did a recording on some brand new sm900 and it shedded like crazy. my lifters were a bit worn, so i thought that was the problem, but i covered them with plastic and the shedding continued. it could be that some of the guides are worn too, i guess. Im hoping it was just a bad batch of...

2" 16 track advice on brands

this is a great thread to read before going to bed, so you can dream about owning these tape machines.... I didn't even know new machines were still being manufactured. I mean, i thought studer was the only one. who else is still making new machines besides studer?

    Am i a candidate for a relap?

my current concern is getting the music I just recorded mixed down safely. Im afraid that repeated plays and rewinds might dull or even erase the audio on track 7 & 8. The plastic straws might be a good temporary fix for me, then after we get this recording mixed down i'll probobly try to rotate...

    Am i a candidate for a relap?

rotating the lifters sounds like a great idea. any tips on how to do that? I got a quote for the relap over the phone from sprague magnetics in southern california. i think the guys name was john- you should give them a call. http://www.sprague-magnetics.com/audio.htm

    Am i a candidate for a relap?

I have a TSR-8 that is starting to show its age. Grooves have formed on some of the transports and/or the lifter mechanism. This is causing brand new tape to shed, gunking up the heads. Ive had my problems with sticky shed in the past, and now i'm using only brand new SM900 tape. (i'm only...

    Sticky Shed Help Thread

I'll do that. Unfortunately it's going to take me a while to get the film developed, this being the analog only forum and all... ;) it's true, the only camera i have is a 35mm Minolta. I can take a photo with my phone but i doubt the quality would be good enough for a diagnosis. I'm going to...

    Sticky Shed Help Thread

do you think other people may be experienceing this? should i start a new thread about it? also, which peice is the "lifter"? Is that the movable roller on the far left side? I'm using a TSR-8. I've had problems with sticky tape before and I'm hoping that it hasn't caused irrepairable (sp?)...

    Sticky Shed Help Thread

Question Is it common for brand new SM900 tape to shed material? I had a recording session yesterday and was using SM900 tape on my TSR-8. I found that i needed to clean the heads between every song we recorded. After about 5 minutes of recording time i would start to lose volume on tracks 7...

    recording Indie rock

Bah. I knew this thread would be toast as soon as I saw it was called "recording indy rock" posted by "emomusician" -thats asking to be crucified. To me, Indi rock refers to stuff from the late eighties and early nineties like Mudhoney, Pavement, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion etc... and...

transfering a pancake to a reel

I'm considering making my next purchase of (1/2") tape and was thinking about buying pancakes to save a few bucks- i've got a bunch of sticky tape i could toss and keep the empty reels. Unfortunately I'm not even sure what a pancake looks like or how i would transfer it to one of the blank...

    TSR 8 track volume differences

let it go into the red. analog distortion sounds a lot better than digital distortion. i don't use a compressor or NR, so i always try to do a test recording first and get the levels as high as possible without too much distortion. Recording drums on tape is all i know, so im not sure what to...

    TSR 8 track volume differences

yes i agree. I have also had lots of success using just one overhead (a large diaphragm dynamic) and close micing the snare, toms and kick. on a four piece drumset this would use up five tracks. You can pan the toms and even the snare (very slightly!) and achieve a stereo effect without losing...

A monk is trying to convert me to Analogism.

I would love to have a studer half track to master to, and a machine to cut records right in my living room. I dont have the space or the money, as im sure is the case with many of us. Mastering to a second analog source does add even more warmth to the recording i agree, but now days your final...

A monk is trying to convert me to Analogism.

good news! there is something speacial about analog- not only does it sound great, but you can see it working, which makes it funner to use in my opinion. I know you want 8 tracks, but a 488 has a very thin amount of tape per track which isn't ideal (3/16" divided by 8). A four track cassette...
