    a lot of folks look on craigslist where you can sometimes see and hear machine before buying. i get many machines off of ebay but it can be risky, not seeing or hearing before buying. also, shipping can cause issues sometimes.

    do ff and rw work ok? any slowdown there after doing one or the other for a good distance?

    one of these back around '68 or so- a craig 212. a year or so later i moved up to an rca 5" reel version with 'piano key' type controls.

    i think 'tech-repair-experience wise', you're lightyears ahead of me but would a squirt or two of deoxit in the ff/rw switch mechs help at all? seems to work for similar situtions on a few of my consumer decks. good luck! edit-i do see where you say the signal is getting past the switch, tho...

    in that case, don't blame you a bit. as long as it sounds good 2 u, that's what counts. edit-i've occasionally thought about getting an mr-2 just to check it out, maybe i will one of these days.

    there's a working nak mr-1 just came up on the 'bay place; so far-cheap. i got 4 of 'em, and love 'em. they're the ones i think sound better than the tascams. check it out... edit-hope this is ok, here's the item #- 170385874108

    after having had the tascams for a month or so, i have to say my naks sound a little bit better, after all. slightly more clarity and definition. the tascams still sound very good, tho.
