i am not familiar with it. But i have a side question for you. Why is the 688 atractive to you ? is it the cost of the cassettes ?

yes, that is one way. I don't remember the -5db being mentioned in the manual like that, are you sure on that one ?

ok, so what's next is BIAS and record levels. unload the calibration tape first and store it in a safe place. You will adjust now, the other stuff, like REC level, REC EQ and BIAS. What you have in the picture is a frequency counter, you can use it to adjust the output frequency of the...

if that is 10Khz, that is pretty good, and it doesnt get much better than that. You ar good to go. I am guessing the second video (the one with no opening) is the 1khz. If it is 10Khz, your recorder has a extremely well working transport. Anyway i think you are already there if that is...

if that is 10Khz, the first picture is pretty good. the second one is bad, significant phase difference.

you need azimuth adjustment on both. SYNC is worse. the scale is good now, as you can see a better picture. This is a little tricky, be patient do one head first and report progress. Start with SYNC which is the worst case. Do it with the 10Khz tone. If you fix 10Khz, the 1Khz will be...

yes, looks good. You may also want to change the scope scale to 0.5 or 0.2 instead of "1" , so you get a better view. You are right after you confirm with the generator directly and see the perfect 45 degree line, it is time to load the MRL and capture it with 1k and 10k tones. Post...

that's good. so for those cases, even with the EQ adjustment, you can't get to 0db ?. the range is +/- 2db so it is not too bad. Check azimuth now. in both sync and repro modes. Remember to the scope part and the ellipse... we discussed that one like 50 posts ago or so.

no issues Ron, we are happy to help. So i suggest the following: 0. Use the jumpers in the back and remove the DBX from the equation completely 1. Connect the generator direct to the RMS meter and check if it is stable or not, if not then it is the generator 2. If it is, then connect it...

turn off DBX and do everything from scratch at this point. even input levels. given all the different setups and changes it is impossible to know exactly what you did with or without DBX. So turn it off and start the whole calibration from the beginning. It should be stable and not hover...

oh, no. NEVER put the recorder in REC mode with a calibration tape loaded. Also make sure all of the buttons for the track are NOT in rec ready mode.

switching the tracks off is as good.

    MS16 Calabration

no, those should be fine as they don't involve tape related activities.

turn off DBX on all channels. That is the problem !. Your calibration tape and all calibration procedures must be done with DBX OFF on all channels. So turn off DBX and recalibrate levels again for 1Khz first on repro and sync mode. Then move to 10k and report back.

More questions: So in SYNC mode: 1. At 1khz do ALL channels read 0db on the VU and -10 on the RMS meter ? (make sure the knob is in "1") 2. When the tape gets to the 10Khz section you get -3db on all with no changes on the RMS meter scale ? confirm 3. Have you demagnetized the heads ?

    MS16 Calabration

ok, some questions: 1. Do you see the same behavior on all channels ? (on SYNC) 2. What is your calibration tape ? 355 nwb/m ? is it a new tape ? what is the condition ? where did it came from ? The 30 ips mod has no impact. It should work fine. Try the following: 1. Find a channel on...

have you touched the head alignment ? at all ?

    MS16 Calabration

ok, here's a summary: 1. Play the calibration tape at 1Khz 2. Put it in repro mode 3. With nothing else connected other than the RMS meter to the output (leader lmv-181), adjust the level with R204 until you get to 0dB in the VU meter, and -10 on the green scale of your RMS meter. 4. Put it...
