All My Ghosts - Frank Black and the Catholics cover.

Well, the frequency content of consonants such as T, S, P etc, which make the words intelligible even when they are quite low in the mix, is concentrated in the 3-10k area. There's a balancing act to perform, though - just putting an EQ hump over those frequencies will get the words heard but...

All My Ghosts - Frank Black and the Catholics cover.

Morning guys! Thanks very much for your comments. Yes, I did take some reverb off things. There was reverb on the left hand guitar, which I reduced quite a bit, also I took a bit off the vocal and upped the slapback delay a fraction to compensate. It gives the impression of reverb but with a...

i'm so lonesome i could cry

Ha! I totally get the Johnny Cash thing. Your tone is very like his, as you're probably aware. His tuning wasn't super accurate either. I'm a fan of characterful voices, not notes that are accurate to within a couple of cents. That ain't music, to me. The mix seems spot on for this style. Can't...

    New Tune - Rearview

Hi, Chili :) In some ways, this mix is almost there. I think the bass guitar and chopping guitar are a little loud. They ought to reinforce the drum beat, but to a degree they're overwhelming it, a bit. Added to that, the chops on the guitar and the bass riffs are not quite as tight as they...

All My Ghosts - Frank Black and the Catholics cover.

Thanks for the listens and suggestions, everybody - I've tried to address all the points raised. New mix in the OP. :)

    Happier Times mix

This isn't a bad mix, the levels are pretty good but a few elements sound a little too hi-passed and brittle, particularly the vocal and snare. A little more body is required on those, I think.

    never get enough

It's not a comfortable listen on headphones with the synth pad throbbing from ear to ear, but the mix has a nice sheen, especially in the way the vocal is delivered and mixed. Short and sweet, as well!

    Like Spinning Plates

It sounds really, really good. I dig the piano sound this time around and you've got your extra parts to sit better. Great. :) Regarding the clicks, you could zoom right in on the waveform, identify the click, split the track either side of it and pull the volume down. I had to do that on the...

Listening to the third mix. :D It mostly sounds very good. I'm noticing the same thing that Greg mentioned in the last third - you're losing the drums as you're adding more layers. You have to find a way of keeping the drums clear and big as you add the new parts. One slight thing I might...

All My Ghosts - Frank Black and the Catholics cover.

Thanks, mate. Just had it turned up loud on the monitors and I've discovered a whistle frequency in the vocal. There's also a little mud there. BBL. :)

Really? Bloody, hell, I'm not usually that far out. I'll give it another listen! :o Edit: You're right- it was something like 5dB too loud! That can't be right. I must have done something to it by accident, just before rendering the track. Mix replaced in the OP.

All My Ghosts - Frank Black and the Catholics cover.

I've been on holiday for the last few weeks and I've been a busy little bee amusing myself with recording while I have the opportunity. Hence, I have a backlog of stuff to post. :) I hope some of you have the time and inclination to listen and comment, I feel like I'm hogging the place, a bit...

    one man's junk is...

Nice score, but the stock Celestial [sic] isn't great in that cab, though it was matched very well sonically with that amp. It's 4 Ohm as well, which limits its usability in combinations.

    Minimalism

It's a device or a function on a synth that automatically plays an arpeggio in a predetermined pattern when you hold down a chord. :)

    The New Tone Thread

LOL, have a great gig, Greg. :D Friday night, we gigged after four weeks scheduled recuperation. We used a quality house PA and at the soundcheck our other guitarist was soundchecked first with his Blackstar 50w head and 2x12 cab. The FOH chap was going "it's sort of thin and scratchy - can...

Llano del Rio - Acoustic country from an inveterate punk.

Thanks, Armistice. I was really quite surprised at how Frank picked up the Uke. I shouldn't be - he just seems to grab an instrument, the next thing y'know he's playing it. Kids, eh? :D Thanks, Heatmiser. The original has loads of pedal steel on it, which skewed my idea of what genre this...

    Remix of Prior Song

I remember this song from the first time you posted this and I still like it. :D One thing that's bugging me is the sound that's passing for the snare sound. It has a strange flam sound, more like a blown raspberry than a snare. Is that intentional and part of your vibe? I thought it might be an...

Hi Jdude. :D I'm listening to the second mix. I remember the first time you posted this, so it's good to hear ith with vocals. The mix overall is a good sounding one. Any nits will come from the direction of personal taste in tone. All the guitars sound great to me except, perhaps the one...

    cold, cold ground

Just read the other comments. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT do anything to soften this mix drums-wise. :D I did get the Flaming Lips thing with the drums, particularly "Race for the Prize" but as Nola said, with less distortion! If you emasculate this mix, I'll hunt you down - it's the best thing...
