Pixies "Debaser" feat. Paulman77 on vocals.

Ha ha! I love Gigantic, I'll put it to Frank. I'm sure Manda would love to do it too, an old band we were in together used to cover it and she sang it great. :D I can't do Frank Black's falsetto these days, I might have to call in a deputy. :D

LOL, Thanks, Armistice. Regarding the bass tone, when I was mixing it I found that the only bass tone that really worked was the one they'd used on the record. More grit and it disappeared or sounded wrong on the intro; more gain and it disappeared rhythmically. The guy who mixed this...

Pixies "Debaser" feat. Paulman77 on vocals.

Interesting, thanks for the comments, Greg. On point, as always.:D I admit, I hadn't heard the snare as boxy(ish) until you mentioned it, but upon investigation I found the reason. This is only the second track I've done where I've tried a bottom snare mic and I'd forgotten to invert the...

Thanks, JDOD. :) Yes, my missis has great capacity. We first met when I was holidaying in Fiji. She was the best pearl diver in the village. It's compressed like buggery already - I'll probably need to pull the shouts down individually. :D

Right, so first up I admit straight off the bat that this is an impossible song to cover successfully, but a random chat between Paulman and myself ended up with us (misguidedly?) deciding to give it a go anyway. Enough excuses, here it is. :D https://soundcloud.com/bubba_po/debaser

    Need honest opinions on vocals

If you don't know yourself whether you can sing, then you probably can't sing.

Much better. The bass and drums sound really locked in, now and the mix is all the better for it. For personal preference I think the kick and bass are possibly a hair too loud in the first third of the song before the rest of the instruments fill up the space. Pretty excellent stuff.

Llano del Rio - Acoustic country from an inveterate punk.

Well, we agree on that, then! Over in the UK we have a radio programme called "Bob Harris Country". The guy's my namesake ( "Whispering" Bob Harris, as he became nicknamed) and was famous for being the host of the seminal live rock show "The Old Grey Whistle Test" in the 70s. Any band worth...

All My Ghosts - Frank Black and the Catholics cover.

It's the direct out from my Marshall JVM and it just sounds good. Remarkably good - I did nothing bar a little presence lift and low cut to sit in the mix better.

All My Ghosts - Frank Black and the Catholics cover.

Thanks, guys. Y'know, this is one of the few mixes I've been truly happy with. I've been putting it on just to listen to, and forgetting completely that it was my own work. I can't normally do that. :)

transfer tracks directly to flash drive?

My Boss BR-800 was a great little machine, but it didn't store its onboard info as WAV files. They had to be transferred to the PC by a Boss WAV converter program. If other stand-alone machines work that way, I can't see any way round that.

All My Ghosts - Frank Black and the Catholics cover.

Thanks very much, I appreciate how you always take the time to comment on my mixes. To some extent, the song is meant to be a little hard and aggressive sounding, not entirely smooth and comfortable, but I'll listen again with your points in mind. :) Harshness vs. clarity in a dense mix - a very...

    Happier Times mix

As a matter of interest, what mic, or what type of mic are you using and how are you recording your voice? If you're using a condenser mic and singing from 150-300mm away, then your room may be causing the boxiness. Horrible rooms (too small, too square) are a real problem when recording vocals...

    The New Tone Thread

I love how you go the extra mile, Greg. Even if it didn't blow the world of guitar recording apart you went and did the experiment, which is awesome. Nice one. That would be ace. I can see it being like that scene where Wayne and Garth are trying to play hockey in the street; "CAR!!!!" :D All...

Cadillac Express with easlern and ibleedburgundy

Yes, I think the bass guitar is supplying all the low end in the mix and ought to share it with the kit, more. a lift on the bass at 1-2 kHz would help, plus a bit of low thinning once the kit is beefed up. They ought to sound like a unit but it's not quite there yet.

Nice song, Ray. :) As usual the guitars are faultless, played and mixed really well. Nick's vocal is great and the harmonies work well, nice and subtle. IBB's drum parts are well-played too and the whole thing has quite a nice "Dreams" (Fleetwood Mac) groove. If you don't mind suggestions for...

    New Song (Original)

I'm in bed on the laptop at the moment, so can't give an in-depth critique, but I'll listen properly later. I agree with most comments mentioned already. I love how the song builds up to, what was it, "a glorious mess"? :D Even so, I would drop those big guitars a dB or two, no more, just so the...
