Tascam TSR-8 set up (bias...) + Tascam 58 tension arm rollers

So, if your cal tape is 250nWb/m, but you’re setting up your record side to print hotter relative to 0VU (by reducing the reproduce level by some amount, -3dB in your case), don’t you have to drop your input level by that same amount when setting the bias? Like take whatever the manual says...

    Audio Technica AT-RMX64 Story…

    1. The AT-RMX64’s rated power requirement is 65W, so I see no reason why a 100W rated step-down power transformer wouldn’t be fine. If the mechanical noise bothers you you can always eventually look for something higher quality. 2. The lamps I used in my AT-RMX64 are JKL DA-403. These are...

    TASCAM M-520 w/TASCAM 80-8

So glad you figured it out. This is what makes it hard to sort these things out online when we can’t actually see what you see. So it’s important everybody keep that in mind. Glad it was simple. I’m sure you’ll have other questions though now that you hopefully have an easier time passing...

    TASCAM M-520 w/TASCAM 80-8

Start by monitoring at the direct out jack for channel 1 to verify signal is passing through the channel before you try and figure out monitoring at the master section.

    TASCAM M-520 w/TASCAM 80-8

Please refer to my post #31 in your parallel thread for some guidance. But also heed @RFR’s suggestion to first just see if you’ve got good signal at the channel 1 direct out.

Tascam TSR-8 set up (bias...) + Tascam 58 tension arm rollers

The brass is not critical…steel is fine, but I was talking about stainless steel…the one you linked is raw steel if I’m reading it right (or if my browser is translating correctly), so you’ll want to put a light coating of oil on it to prevent oxidation. Otherwise that would work. Your local...

Thanks, @RFR…that’s much better to get him going. Sometimes I’m too detailed.

    TASCAM M-520

You’ve got signal to the PGM 1 buss, but now you have to set the monitor section of the console to listen to it. Okay? You’ve got your inputs (channels 1-20), and those can be summed (combined) to any or all of 8 mono summing busses (PGM groups 1-8)…great…but now you have to set the monitor...

Tascam TSR-8 set up (bias...) + Tascam 58 tension arm rollers

Here is a cross-section i drew up of the washer…it is not to scale. Dimensions are in millimeters: I believe the material is brass. It is a precision part. I’m reasonably confident you’re not going to find this off-the-shelf…i suspect this was custom made for or by Teac. The other...

Tascam TSR-8 set up (bias...) + Tascam 58 tension arm rollers

Okay that all makes sense. Just follow the procedure in the manual. The 58 manual indicates to use 10kHz. I’m seeing now the manual doesn’t offer coarse and fine set instructions. If your azimuth is way out of whack (which shouldn’t ever be the case with either of your machines because the...

Tascam TSR-8 set up (bias...) + Tascam 58 tension arm rollers

Ah okay. Cool. That tape is not the basic 100Hz/1kHz/10kHz tape, but also not as comprehensive as the tape with the full tone ladder. But those frequencies are good and will do a reasonably good job of helping you get your response curve setup on the playback side, and of course setting/checking...

So here is where we need you to be specific and detailed if you want help. 20 questions can be a fun game, but not here IMO. That’s just me. I want to help. But you need to help me. “I’m hearing it from several places…” WHAT places. Be specific. And walk me through in detail how each of the...

Tascam TSR-8 set up (bias...) + Tascam 58 tension arm rollers

Just a couple comments…I don’t know what tape you are using, or what your plans are, but if you record hotter like that using a “+6” class tape like SM911 keep in mind you may run into tracking errors using the dbx noise reduction. This is because the closer you run your nominal record signal to...

    TASCAM M-520

Why did you use the 350 when recording? Why not just use the M-520 for everything? It’s a better signal path than the 350.

    Son Of Tascam 58 Story...

I can’t believe it’s been over five years since I updated this thread. Wow. Shortly after the last post the COVID-19 pandemic bloomed, and in the intervening years between then and now there’s been a lot to fill the time…some challenging family adventures both within my household as well as...

Does it belong here or elsewhere?

Honest question…I’m well over halfway through a deep-dive rebuild/upgrade on the Roland JUNO-106 1980s digitally-controlled analog synthesizer I recently acquired (related thread here: https://homerecording.com/bbs/threads/you-never-know-what-you-might-find-for-free%E2%80%A6.430360/). I’d like...

    TASCAM M-520

Good call, @RFR…the ACCESS points are right after the mic amp. So you would see O/L lamp activity but no signal would pass after that without the jumpers in place.

    TASCAM M-520

Yeah, when talking about the M-500 series I refer to the “PGM” groups which is Teac’s verbiage, it they are also labeled as BUSS on the jack panel. Anyway…yes…the subgroups or mono mix busses…all good terminology.
