I'm in a somewhat similar situation. I think the Presonus Audiobox will do everything you need for $150. USB, two pres w/ phantom power, AD conversion, nice construction.
Yep, I read a post on this forum about that method so that's how I started out, but the better plugins have filters built right in--seems to make it a bit easier.
Exactly! That's what I'm after.
I played around with the demo version of apTrigga last night and got it to work really well on my OH test tracks--I think this is the way to go.
Thanks for that. I'm only really interested in triggering the kick--from what I've read everything else can be picked up pretty well with overheads, if the player is good. That's what I'm striving for.
Anyone else?
I'm just starting out recording and am considering tracking drums with minimal gear. The goals are to monitor my playing, to learn how to play so that the tracks come out well (becoming a 'good' drummer in the engineer's view), and to learn more about recording than I can by just reading this...
Thanks for looking through my post and for your response. Seems like the best thing to do is demo the interior and get a more complete picture of the existing structure before considering more construction details...

Hello!
I'm planning to improve the TL of my basement jam room but I have a few questions. I gather that some information must be supplied in order to get answers, so crack open a(nother) beer and let me get started. =) Or, just skip to the questions at the end of this post. Here's a somewhat...
If it looked like this then it was mine. =P I'm still waiting on one last part but I'll post pics up when the kit's all together. Keep up the tracking!
Hey killer,
Your kit sounds highly decent! I'm also new to recording, trying to figuring out what modest gear to get to record my own kit, which is still a work in progress. Your clip sounds like a pretty good first effort!
Thanks for your post. The vlz3 has phantom power for its XLR ins. Until just now I thought preamps provided phantom power, now I realize the preamp amplifies the input signal. Makes a lot more sense now. Thanks for that! Indeed it's starting to look like a 4-channel interface is the way to...
I'm thinking of getting a minimalist setup for tracking drums: 2 OH condensers, a dynamic kick mic, and that little vlz3 mixer with two mic pres.
What are the pros and cons of using an XLR to TRS cable for the dynamic mic and running it into a balanced/unbalanced line in jack on the mixer?
Thanks for the reply, Nick.
Looks like I have to get an 8 pre interface if I'm going to go all XLR and stick with firewire--seems like massive overkill for my application. Is there a lower profile (I mean smaller/less hardware) alternative...or am I stuck?
Hello! First post here, thinking about a simple setup for beginning recording, specifically tracking drums.
Seems that you can do just fine with 4 mics (2 OH, kick, snare), but what do I need to get those four tracks into my laptop so I can apply effects individually and to the whole group...
