    DIY IPOD dock.

Paul, would you please post a shot of the empty dock? I'd like to see how you are making the audio connnection to the ipod. I love the enclosure! Nothing says ghetto like audio gear housed in cardboard! Paul

Is anyone out there using LINUX Ubuntu for recording? what software?

Dr V, you were obviously offended by my comment, which was intended to be a light hearted reference to your "blue screen" posts, so I offer my unreserved apology. Clearly the smiley did not make that sufficiently evident. I will say that I have been using Linux solidly for the last 10 years...

    1176 DIY compressor help

I confess that I've put the 1176 on the back burner for a while. I'm working up for another compressor project, which will combine the JLM Audio Baby Animal Dual (BAD) preamp with the JLM MAC opto compressor, 2 channels in a 2RU case. I think this will be fun to build and use. The BAD circuit...

    1176 DIY compressor help

Hi Geoff, My Rev J boards were each supplied with a separate PSB board, which can optionally be built instead of the on-board supply. One PSU board provides sufficient power for 2 x 1176 boards, so that is what I will use. It looks like a fairly standard LM317/337 implementation. Paul

Is anyone out there using LINUX Ubuntu for recording? what software?

Ardour is by far the more flexible and powerful, at the cost of a steeper learning curve. Given Dr V's experiences with computers in general, one may wish to take this advice with a pinch of salt :D Paul

    1176 DIY compressor help

I've stopped by your web site, and the information you've made available is impressive and well set out. I have a pair of Mnats Rev J boards and am collecting components at a leisurely pace. I bought a 2 channel enclosure from one of the enterprising chaps over at GroupDIY. I'll definitely be...

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

Condenser microphones are active - they require power to operate. That power is provided by the phantom power, available from preamps or from standalone phantom power supplies. Passive microphones (that is, most ribbons and dynamic mics) do not require power, so phantom is switched off when...

Is anyone out there using LINUX Ubuntu for recording? what software?

JACK handles all the audio routing. It operates between device drivers and JACK-aware applications. For any Linux distro, it is worth looking at Ardour. It is powerful and highly flexible. For an inexpensive commercial product, try Harrison Mixbus. It uses part of the Ardour DAW engine, but...

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

Mid-side is a two microphone technique to produce a stereo recording. One mic is cardiod or omnidirectional, the other has a figure-8 pattern. Ribbon mics happen to have a figure-8 pattern - they respond more strongly to sound from in front and behind, and tend to reject sound from the sides...

10 ft OK mic cable vs 25ft high-quality

With a low impedance balanced mic output, probably up to 100m is OK. In other words, difference between 10ft and 25ft is inconsequential, so use either without concern. Paul

Ribbon mic recommendations for recording flute

I own two of them, which I built from kits. At one time Artur received a batch of bodies for the RM-5 which had a machining fault. He did not feel comfortable selling these on a finished commercial product. Instead, he decided to sell the flawed bodies in kit form with motors (which he also...

Connecting AT2020 to Xonar Essence STX soundcard

The Xonar Essence STX is a superb card for audio playback. I have a couple of Essence ST cards, and they perform extremely well. You will have problems, however, getting the AT2020 to work with the Xonar. The first problem, you have identified. You need phantom power for this mic. That can...

    Saturation

Agreed, and I think that this may be exactly what some people don't like about digital recording. Digital recording is ruthlessly accurate and doesn't impart any "mojo" of its own.

    Behringer AM 100

Practically any electronic component store will have something that will work. Most likely the knobs are a press-fit, and the shaft of the pot will either look like a letter-D when you look at it end on, or it will have splines (grooves). You just need a knob that is suited to the pot shaft...
