Question; any progress after Pod and J-Station?

Two years ago I bought myself the J-Station, an interesting guitar amp modeling unit with 24/44.1 Spdif out. I was wondering if we got any further in the mean time? That is to say, I never was completely crazy about the sound the J-Station and Pod produce. I don’t like the concept of guitar...

    Mic pres: Spend $200 or $2,000 ? ? ?

Hi Dan / Harvey, I would like to take advantage of your presence here on this forum to ask you a question: I am a big music/recording/electronics fan and own a small home studio with lots of reasonably good quality recording equipment and microphones. I am however also a big electronics fan...

Help needed in selecting a great pair of mic pres- style of V76 or 1073 on a budget.

Hi, I tried various cheap and mid-priced pre¡¦s including Focusrite (not the Red series), Art, Mindprint, Behringer and was never really enthusiastic about them etc except for the Behringer Ultragain which I kept because it¡¦s a reasonably good extra stereo pre for really very little money...

Record your headphone mix when improvising

I think I’ve found an easy solution for a problem that has bothered me since I started recording with VST on my computer. I like writing songs, and do this by improvising with my guitar with headphones on while singing some kind of “phonetical” melody line. If I found an interesting theme, I...

Some experiences with my new Joe Meek VC1Qcs:

Some experiences with my new Joe Meek VC1Qcs: Transformer pre-amp Opto compressor Equalizer Enhancer / De-Esser What I immediately liked about the box is the fact that all units really do something audible. It’s not like you will be seriously questioning yourself if the compressor is activated...

Poll : Best all-round mic for beginner

Your post is funny! Even if it looks like I’m making a rather strong statement against the SM57. I mainly do it because I can’t stand postings in which everybody starts agreeing with each other. Everybody just starts mixing everything up, like: “did you ever try a SM57 through a good pre-amp?”...

Poll : Best all-round mic for beginner

I thought we all agreed that the SM57 was the one and only microphone that can replace everything else ever produced. Even Phil Collins uses it for vocals didn’t we forget? I now somebody tells that no mic under $1.000 can produce an airy sound. I think we will have to start this discussion...

SPDIF / ADAT data transmission rate?

I’m willing to take the risk. I already build the power supply and that works great. If the card’s outputs won’t manage I will build an extra buffer. I’ll try you twisted pair cable. I’ve still got a nice piece of special shielded twisted pair that could do fine. I’ll keep you informed, Jan

Poll : Best all-round mic for beginner

Look at the specifications of a SM57. At 6000Hz, a huge presence peak of about 7db (very unpleasant frequency for recording). At 15.000Hz the level is already more then 12db lower then that peak! SM57 Sensitivity: 1.9mV www.shure.com/pdf/userguides/guides_wiredmics/sm57_en.pdf Compare this to...

SPDIF / ADAT data transmission rate?

OK, here is a link to the pdf manual www.rme-audio.com/english/download/aebxi_e.pdf As you can see there is an internal “CDROM” type connector for the clock signal. The little two pin connector sends the actual 8 cannel ADAT info Thanks for your help, Jan

SPDIF / ADAT data transmission rate?

Thanks for your suggestions. It is a rather peculiar case since I will have to connect a computer extension card with a ADAT signal over a normal wire and not optical. Inside the computer the converter card is connected to my RME DIGI9624PST with a very short shielded cable of only 20cm. I more...

    BEHRINGER Ulta voice pro

So far I like my new gear except for the Track Master which sounded to thin by my humble opinion. I swapped it for a VC6Q which will come next week The NTK seems to have less proximity effect then my other mics (I like proximity effect). The combination with the Track Master was not...

SPDIF / ADAT data transmission rate?

I have to make myself a cable of about 10ft long in order to connect a 8channel 24bit breakout box to my RME DIGI96PST soundcard. I’m wondering if I will have to use special data transmission cable like 75ohm Ethernet coax cable or if I could also use a good quality shielded audio cable. Does...

    BEHRINGER Ulta voice pro

It’s weird but nobody managed to give an answer to the question of this topic. Does anyone have specific experience with the Ultra Voice Pro. For what I can see they cloned something like the Focusrite Voicemaster, but it might be a good clone? My experience with Behringer is that the quality...

    BEHRINGER Ulta voice pro

I’ve got a B. patchbay and a B. dual preamp. First thing: B. is kitsch! They suck in quality control and they are kitsch kitsch kitsch! The pre-amp that I have (I don’t know the name), Is supposed to be a tube amp. It does indeed have a tube! With three leds behind the tube that slowly start...

there's a new mic on the block

Jan is the most common name in Holland, where I was born. Besides Holland I think that there are also Jan’s in Poland. Jan is the Dutch equivalent for John, or Jon (like Jon Lord) and I think also Ian. Here in Italy lot’s of people misspell my name as Ian thinking that I’m British. There are...
