Try turning down the gain on your preamp and make sure it's not clipping. After that simple troubleshooting, if it still sounds terrible it's because the amp sounds terrible. Hate to break it to you, but your microphone seems to be more honest than your ears.

I don't have the parts. I was hoping someone with some leftovers from their mod would be willing to part with a couple caps.

He needs to feel as if he's in the same environment. Have him hold onto a microphone (not plugged in) while he records or something.

I've got a US-122, and never had a gain problem with an SM57. It's got the gain, but it definitely has the noise too. The preamps just aren't good. I ended up putting an M-Audio DMP3 in between the SM57 (or any mic I'm using) and the US-122, with the gain on the 122 all the way down. Not the...

Looking back, I agree wholeheartedly. Although, had I not worked with what he gave me, the song wouldn't have turned into the same "story" that it did. So now that I have my equation, I'll simplify :)
