    Myths

myth: every track should sound good on its own without the context of the entire mix

    Myths

Yes and no. Just because something isn't musically theoretically sound doesn't mean it won't work. Another Zep example: in "Achilles Last Stand", John Paul Jones told Jimmy Page that the ascending verse bridges would not work because the harmonic scale it drew from was theoretically...

    Myths

Sorry if this has already been said. I've only made it to about page three of this thread so far. :o You should know right off the bat that I've been playing and writing music for nearly 25 years, the first eight years being classically trained in two brass instruments, plus interval and...

Brand Name or Custom Built Computer?

After three brand-name atrocities, I decided to have my studio pc built at www.cyberpowerpc.com, picking my components after much research here and elsewhere. Never again will I go with a pre-built machine. There isn't anyone in computers outside recording enthusiasts and engineers that know...

    Worst Singer EVER

Which is why I can't possibly vote for Mustaine as worst singer. He has the perfect pissed off underdog metal punk voice for the perfect pissed off underdog metal punk band. Billy Corgon on the other hand, is the nastiest piece of vocal shit I ever heard. And I'm reminded of that in every song...

    Worst Instrumentalist Ever

I'd hafta go with Satriani. I was kinda shocked at how much I didn't like his style after hearing all the praise about him. I almost picked Vai because I'm completely sick of his style, but he had a few redeeming moments back in the DLR days.

    RME Digi9636 volume control ??

ssscientist is right. I own the digi9636 and have used it with and without analog output expansion boards. The output is, IIRC, standard line output level that is not adjustable by the card itself, but by the components it interfaces, such as a mixer.

Production Quality, What's The Big Deal?

While a song doesn't have to have the highest sound quality possible, it does have to have a minimum of decency. If a non-audiophile listener says to himself "wow, I love this song, except...", and that "except" is related to the quality of sound, then you have a) failed the song for depriving...

    Recording n00b....

For starters, as Massive said, monitors are the most important part of the recording chain. They are essential not only for mixing, but for determining whether it sounds good when being recorded. To record a drummer, you won't be able to record one piece of the kit at a time. You will be using...

why is no one using ntrack

"Snap to grid" forces you to move waveforms in fixed increments. For example, let's say that you have a latency issue and you need to line up a rhythm guitar track you just recorded to a similar track you recorded earlier. If the earlier-recorded guitar falls halfway between two grid lines, you...

how do you pan your guitars?

Actually, Hetfield recorded three rhythm guitars. Two panned hard left and right, and one straight down the middle.

4 most most important things to do in the mixing process

You are looking at this as if tracking and mixing are two distinct stages applied separately, but in fact they are not. Many rough mixes are made during the entire process to see how things are progressing. This saves time, reveals potential problems, and allows for creativity to solve those...

how do you pan your guitars?

I prefer to record all my guitar tracks separately using different amp and distortion settings as opposed to copying single guitar tracks and adding delay. If I'm recording fast, palm muted riffing, I'll turn the gain significantly down to keep the guitars sounding clean. The palm muting will...

why is no one using ntrack

I was using N-track (version 3 I think) while saving up the cash I needed for an RME soundcard. What a complete pain in the ass. First, the program's "snap to grid" function was on by default. Not covered by the piss-poor online manual, I wasted weekends trying to find an answer to a problem...

    How necessary is a subwoofer?

You absolutely do not need a subwoofer and I would not recommend it in your case. Professional results can be made just by getting your ears attuned to how your mixes sound in your room. And since professional mixes aren't even your priority, you probably won't even listen in such detail anyway.

    Micing Heavy Guitar Tone -

Have you tried recording with overemphasized mids and scooping them out when you mix? This will allow you to capture frequencies around the range that are normally cut when working with a single parametric knob at the amp level, bringing out more of the natural tone of the instrument.

    i aren't getting any better

For most people, improvement comes in a series of plateaus: when you start, the learning curve is huge but once you get past the fundamentals, you begin to improve at a moderate pace and you think "wow, I'm getting the hang of this, I will kick ass in no time at all!". And then the improvement...

    HR Vets: Clue Me In

Perhaps the most important part in a higher quality setup is a good listening environment, which consists of decent studio nearfield monitors and a clean amp that drives them (if they are not internally powered), placed in a good room. You will not be able to bring your recordings up to quality...

Don't even bother asking questions on recording websites...

Very few people here act as if they have the answer to the meaning of life. If anything, people like you are getting frustrated because you think we should have the meaning of life. I would venture to say that a third of the questions on this board can be answered with "I don't know, why don't...
