    Degaussing/demagnatizing

Just to play devil's advocate: I asked the same question in the SOS forum a while back. Here's the reply I received from Hugh Robjohns, SOS Technical Editor: "Since tape heads rely on magnetism to 'read' the audio signal, and sicne they can be partically magnetised by the passing of magnetic...

I've heard of graphic equalizers and parametric equalizers. Paragraphic is a new one.

    vox sound too "out front"

Is that a 4-band parametric? You need a parametric EQ to be able to cut at a specific frequency. Just seen you've got ProTools. Is there a parametric EQ included in the software? On a software parametric EQ you can set the precise frequency, then cut using the fader or whatever. On a hardware...

    vox sound too "out front"

Reverb is one way of making the vocals less out front in the mix, but maybe you don't want reverb on a hip hop vocal. One EQ chart I printed out recommended cutting at 3K to help a vocal sit in the mix. I've been trying this and it seems to work, but I could be fooling myself. (Ha ha, nearly...

    Drum machines/stereo output/instrument levels

Hi, this is a question about getting the best sound out of a drum machine which has only a pair of stereo outputs, particularly about the relative volume levels of kick drum and snare. I set all levels by ear but can't make up my mind about kick and snare. Usually, I've had the snare on max...

Please, a few more tunes submitted for your opinions.

Hi, I've listened to Back At You and Superstar, two very accomplished mixes which make my own efforts sound like cack by comparison. Back At You is the classier recording/mix I think. Everything's solid, perfectly balanced and the playing is great, esp. the slide guitar. I like the drums as...

    Band Names

It's a good name. I wish I'd thought of it. Of course, in the UK it would be Hi-Zed, which doesn't sound quite so good.

    Replacing humbucker with single coil

The guitar itself isn't that crap - it's a Gordon Smith. They make good guitars, just a little dull. The pick ups have the twang the guitars on a lot of 60s records have. That's what I want to get rid of. It's also an excuse to an experiment with replacing pick ups - something I've often thought...

    Replacing humbucker with single coil

Just looking at a cheap way - £40-£50 - of changing a guitar with a nasty cheap twang into a guitar which sounds like a guitar. Haven't decided yet. Maybe I'll get a stacked humbucker and an ordinary humbucker and put them in. Maybe I'll just sell the guitar. Just investigating options.

    Meek VC3Q--Why and How?

Crawdad, the original VC3 had an Enhancer. Here's a description of what it does: "The final, and perhaps most unusual, section of the Pro Channel is the enhancer, which seems to combine the controls of a conventional enhancer with a parametric EQ. The Drive control sets the level of a filtered...

    Tracking with headphones...

I've been wondering about this. I do all my tracking through headphones - drums, guitars, bass. I know the phones emphasize bass. So if I get everything sounding just the way I like them in the phones, I must in fact be recording everything bass light and ending up with tracks which are bass...

    Replacing humbucker with single coil

Thanks for the replies everyone - esp. Sonnix for the piccy.: gives me an idea of what I'll end up with. I'm not after a Strat sound, particularly. I already have a Strat which is my main guitar. But I have a second guitar which I don't like the sound of. I just want to upgrade the sound to...

That's from Jezar's site: http://www.dreampoint.co.uk/ He wrote Freeverb (downloadable from the site). I've printed out most of his articles and found them very useful.

Life Gets In The Way (...new Mac Brothers song)

Very impressed with the "bigness" and clarity of the overall sound, and the playing. Agree that the guitar is perhaps a little dominant at the expense of the bass and drums. I like drums loud, though. Heard the track 1st on headphones and thought, 'Wow, what a big sound'. Very nice.

    Replacing humbucker with single coil

Does anyone know of a reason for not doing this? I have a guitar with one single coil pick up and one tappable humbucker. I want to replace them both with single coil Strat pick ups. Are there any problems I should be aware of? Would the remainder of the cavity where the humbucker was need...

    Can a 424mkIII do this?

It looks like a multi input soundcard is the only answer for recording in the way you describe. You'd have to make sure though that the PC can read each input as a separate input. I have a four input soundcard, but the PC can only read them as two matched pairs. So even though I have 4 inputs I...

    XLR-mic in Tascam 424 II

Yes, you can go to ye olde music shoppe and buy an XLR to XLR cable. XLR to XLR is supposed to be a better connection than XLR to jack. It should sound better.
