    MIDI vs WAV

You can get software synths or drum machines which you load onto the PC and then use the Yamaha keyboard to play. You'd need the midi cable to do this. You can download demos from places like www.hitsquad.com However, I'm thinking that's not what you're actually trying to do. You want to record...

    MIDI vs WAV

If you want to record the Yamaha sounds onto the PC all you need is the audio cable. You would only need the midi cable if you wanted to use the Yamaha keyboard to play a softsynth or something similar loaded on the PC. The main thing to know about a midi cable is that it only transmits midi...

    MIDI vs WAV

A midi cable can't transmit sound, it only transmits midi signals. What are your cables plugged into? A PC? Maybe with the midi cable plugged in the yamaha is playing a midi instrument on the PC?

    n-track purchasing help?

I bought n-Tracks using an international money order. All very straightforward. I'm in the UK but I don't think that should make any difference.

Anyone seen a hands-on review of the yamaha aw16g?

Sound on Sound reviewed the AW16G this month. I don't know what the availability of this mag is in Santa Barbara. You can read the article online if you're a subscriber, otherwise you'll have to wait 6 months. They gave the AW16G a good review BTW. One of the few cons was that it's 16 bit not 24.

what makes a pro recording sound so much better than a home recording??

I'll chip in before the experts get here. It's a combination of gear, expertise and experience, with expertise and experience being, arguably, the more important. Great mics and great mic pres are frequently cited as being of prime importance. The Neumann U87 mic is often mentioned. This costs...

Can monitors lay on there sides ?

All those famous record producers with their NS10s etc. laid on their sides must know something. Picture after picture in that Behind the Glass book shows a smiling golden-eared person sat in front of monitors laid 'incorrectly' on their side. Yet, the speaker manufacturers know their stuff...

    Newbie with $600-900 to spend.

The 788 has a SCSI connection. You can plug four mics into the 788. It doesn't have XLR connectors. I'm assuming the inputs are good enough for recording drums without a mixer but I don't know for sure. The thread below from the Tascam 788 forum suggests that it does. The post from LGM talks...

    Newbie with $600-900 to spend.

The Tascam 788 might be a possibility. It's a digital 8-track with 4 inputs. Well within your budget. Here's a review of it: http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/feb01/articles/tascam788.asp There's also a users' forum at www.tascam.com

Tascam 424 MkIII and Effect Returns

That's a good idea. I'll try that. And SJJ - you're right about the fader. I remember I used to be able to control the amount of reverb with it. I'm monitoring through the headphone socket of the 424 at the moment because my amp blew. Thanks for the advice.

Can you recommend a 16 step sequencer

Yamaha RM1X? Don't know if it fits your description but it's a rock solid sequencer.

Tascam 424 MkIII and Effect Returns

I'll look at it again, but at the moment even with everything on the 424 set to Min. (Trim and Ch. 5 or 6 Fader, that is - Effect Send is turned up), I get everything swamped with reverb - when using Channel 5 or 6 as a return - unless I adjust the Output and Mix on the effects unit. I assumed...

Tascam 424 MkIII and Effect Returns

Is it a serious limitation of the Tascam 424 MkIII that if you use Channel 1-6 as an Effect Return you can't adjust the level of the incoming signal to any useable amount, but if you use Channel 7 or 8 you can't EQ the incoming signal? (That is, if you keep the Mix (and Output?) knobs of your...

whats the difference between a drum machine & a groove box?

Drum machines usually just have drum sounds on them. Groove boxes usually have synth sounds too e.g the Roland MC-505 etc. Drum machines can swing too BTW, at least, the Boss DR770 can. You can do a whole track on a groove box. i.e. drums, bass line, pads, leads, melodies. Everything except a...

    Akai S3000xl

A proper sampler like the one you've got is a synthesizer without any sounds on it. You have to load the sounds yourself, i.e., sample them. You can do this digitally using a CD-ROM drive and sample CDs (very expensive, usually), or you can sample analogue style using audio CDs or just a mic...

    Opinions on a stand-alone sampler?

Pretty sure the s5000 and sp202 don't have built in sequencers. I have an Akai S2000 which definitely doesn't. I use it for drums. It's not like programming a drum machine. You have to have a stand alone sequencer to "play" the sampler. Or you can plug a midi keyboard into the sampler and use...
