I guess it depends on what you want to do. If you have some good mics, that is a big step in the chain. Next as far as importance would be the preamps, IMO. The preamps on the 2480 while supposedly better than former units in the VS line, are really not that good. They tend to be rather noisy...

The AEA mics are supposedly resurrected RCA mics. This new mic resembles the 77DX a little bit. The 77 is a multipattern. (6 patterns) I'm sure this is a single pattern mic, but we can always hope. :) You are right about the ribbons not needing a pad. But some of them have bass roll-off...
