What kind of computer are you using? If your do as one guy said and get an interface then that will(more than likely) come with preamps and phantom power so that you won't have to worry about buying a bunch of extras.

Like Bob said the SDC's(pencil mic'c) would be your best best bet. I recently got a pair of CAD cm217's at GC(buy one get one free) for 59$ and they sound great for the price.

Harmonica...hahaha. I personally use scratch guitar and vox track to record the drums to so that they are solid.

I've found that making a scratch guitar/vox track to a click track is really helpful. Once I've made the guitar and vox tracks then I mute the click and play to just the guitar and vox to get a solid drum track.

You might need to find someone who can repair it, because it sounds like the machine is having issues with the motor that controls the reels. I've heard of these reels motors failing and people telling me to use as small a tape as possible in order to avoid putting unnecessary strain on them.

Do what DR CobWeb says, because what he said is correct. If you wanna make it easier then just take your tape deck's out put(with whatever adapters that you may need) and plug it in to your interface's input then push record with your tape deck playing.

I'd start with scratch tracks of what ever is going to be your rhythm instruments.

If I remember correctly I only spent 90$ on my FT Pro used, although it didn't come with the DAW or drivers. A good buy none the less and its a quality machine that will give you more flexibility for future needs.
