Just to let you know, I got my AT4040 new + free shipping on eBay for $199...that's under/right at your price range. Haven't really heard anything bad about this mic, and I love it. Use it mostly for acoustic and vocals, though I tried it on my cab, and it did the job.

just to chime in here: I was always pleased with an xy with 2 SDC, but just for experimentation purposes, I tried an LDC (AT4040) over the shoulder with an SDC (mxl603s) on the 12th. It sounded more like I hear on pro albums than the xy. I don't like one over the other, but it's nice to hear...

I tried layering and decreasing the volume of each track, but just wound up distorting my mix due to increased digital summing...guess i need to learn how to mix better :)
